Contributing to the common good
In a democracy, people are citizens.
00:00:00
This means that we have rights, but we also have duties.
00:00:03
In order to contribute to the common good, people must fulfill their civic obligations
00:00:08
because otherwise society would not work.
00:00:16
Let's talk about these civic duties that are extremely important.
00:00:19
First of all, everybody should respect other people's rights.
00:00:24
That's our first duty in a democracy.
00:00:29
But we must also respect public property, like transports, or schools, or hospitals
00:00:32
that belong to everyone.
00:00:39
There are other obligations.
00:00:42
For example, we should defend democracy when it is at risk, or we should participate in
00:00:43
politics because if nobody participates, if nobody cares about politics, democracy will
00:00:50
not work.
00:00:55
And there is a very important civic duty, which is our obligation to pay our taxes.
00:00:57
Taxes are essential.
00:01:05
They are the way to gather money that we need in order to pay for public services, for teachers,
00:01:06
for policemen, for firefighters, or for doctors.
00:01:14
All these things are necessary in order to make our society work, and we can only finance
00:01:19
them if people pay their taxes.
00:01:24
So paying our taxes is a basic civic duty.
00:01:27
Taxes can be direct or indirect, and you should know the difference between them.
00:01:32
Direct taxes are taxes that are paid for what you own, for your property.
00:01:37
For example, if you have a house, you should pay taxes on the house, or if you earn a certain
00:01:43
amount of money, you should pay a tax depending on how much money you earn every year.
00:01:50
These direct taxes are different to indirect taxes.
00:01:57
Indirect taxes are not on what you own, but are on what you buy.
00:02:02
For example, when you buy something at a store, there is a part of the money that you pay
00:02:08
that is a tax.
00:02:13
It is called the VAT, the value-added tax, and it is a tax that you pay because you're
00:02:14
buying something.
00:02:21
Both direct and indirect taxes are essential in order to gather money, and taxes also must
00:02:25
be progressive.
00:02:33
This means that not everybody should pay the same amount of taxes.
00:02:34
That would not be fair.
00:02:40
So in general, many countries have what we call progressive taxes.
00:02:42
Progressive taxes mean that rich people pay more than poor people.
00:02:48
Depending on how much money you earn, how rich you are, the percentage of this income
00:02:54
that you have to pay as a tax is increased progressively.
00:03:01
That's why it's called the progressive taxing system, which tries to achieve fairness, which
00:03:05
tries to be just, making rich people pay more than poor people.
00:03:13
Contributing to the common good is not only about doing our civic duties.
00:03:20
It is also about participating, participating in civil society.
00:03:26
Civil society is formed by associations that do not depend on the government, do not depend
00:03:32
on the state, and that articulate what citizens do in order to create a rich society.
00:03:37
For example, NGOs belong to civil society, as also do spontaneous associations, for example,
00:03:45
of neighbors or friends that create a band or create a football team.
00:03:53
That's part of civil society.
00:03:59
Civil society has a key role in order to preserve our institutions and our way of life because
00:04:01
they articulate the needs and desires of citizens, and they become a very important part of our
00:04:09
social coexistence.
