Hello, my name is Malena and I'm going to speak about the building Madrid-Paris. 00:00:00
This is the building that occupies the largest block of Gran Vía Street in Madrid. 00:00:04
Originally, the building was built as the first department store in Madrid and it was called Almacenes Madrid-Paris. 00:00:08
Work began in 1921 and culminated more than six months behind schedule in January of 1924. 00:00:15
The Madrid-Paris department stores were opened by King Victoria Eugenia and King Alfonso XIII. 00:00:22
Its construction had a total cost of 10 million pesetas, that was the Spanish currency at the time. 00:00:28
In total, the built area amounted to 25 square meters. 00:00:34
It had six lifts and three service lifts and on its multiple floors customers found items with prices ranging between 5 cents and 100,000 pesetas. 00:00:38
Another curiosity of the Madrid-Paris is that in each of its two towers there was a water tank with a capacity of 300 cubic meters each. 00:00:47
However, all the enormous investments and good intentions never obtained the desired return 00:00:56
and after nine years of shaggy life, in 1933, the Madrid-Paris warehouses closed their doors without meeting expectations. 00:01:01
A year later, the well-known Sepo warehouses opened there. 00:01:08
On October 15th of 2015, the largest Primark store in Spain was inaugurated, occupying the first four floors of the building. 00:01:12
And you can visit it as the Primark store nowadays. 00:01:20
