Defining and Non-defining Relative Clauses
There are two types of relative clauses, defining and non-defining relative clauses.
00:00:01
Defining relative clauses give us essential information.
00:00:09
We cannot remove the relative clause and still understand the sentence.
00:00:15
For example, imagine there are two boxes of different colour.
00:00:21
The black box is empty and the red box is full.
00:00:27
So, we can say the box which is red is full.
00:00:33
But if we just say the box is full, then the sentence makes no sense
00:00:38
because there are two boxes and it's not clear which one we are talking about.
00:00:44
So, the color of the box is not extra information.
00:00:50
it's essential information. With defining relative clauses we cannot use commas. The first example
00:00:55
the box which is red is full so with the sentence the relative clause between commas is wrong.
00:01:05
The box which is red is full. This one is correct.
00:01:13
We also can replace WHO, WHICH, WHEN or WHY with THAT.
00:01:20
The prize which she won was very valuable or the prize that she won was very valuable are both correct.
00:01:29
We can omit the relative pronoun or adverb when its function is that of object.
00:01:38
The prize which she won or the prize she won was very valuable is correct.
00:01:48
Non-defining relative clauses give us extra information.
00:01:58
We can remove the relative clause and still understand the sentence.
00:02:04
Imagine there is a red box only.
00:02:11
It is full.
00:02:15
We can say the box, which is red, is full.
00:02:15
If we just say the box is full, the sentence still makes sense
00:02:21
because it is clear which box we are talking about.
00:02:27
There is only one box.
00:02:32
the fact that it is red is extra information with non-defining relative
00:02:33
clauses we must use commas for example my neighbor one who is single throws a
00:02:42
lot of parties we cannot replace the relative pronouns or adverbs with that
00:02:52
the box that is red is full is not correct. We have to say and write the box
00:03:00
comma which is red comma is full. We cannot omit the relative pronoun or
00:03:08
adverb. We cannot say the box is red is full but the box comma which is red
00:03:17
comma is full. Other types of relative clauses are, for example, nominal relative
00:03:24
clauses. In nominal relative clause, the noun and the relative pronoun are
00:03:35
combined in one word which functions as a noun. The common nominal relative
00:03:43
pronouns are what whatever whoever whichever and who look at the examples i couldn't read the
00:03:52
message which or that he sent me i can form a nominal relative clause by saying i couldn't read
00:04:02
what he sent me so i've combined the message which or the message message that in what
00:04:12
you can eat anything that you want you can eat whatever you want
00:04:25
another type of relative clause is the reduced relative clause in reduced relative clauses
00:04:32
we omit the relative pronoun and the verb form of be for example I can reduce
00:04:40
the sentence the woman who is knocking at the door is my sister-in-law to the
00:04:51
woman knocking at the door is my sister-in-law so I omitted the relative
00:04:59
pronoun who and the verb form of be is in this case another example the hotel
00:05:05
which was situated on the outskirts of the town used to belong to my family can
00:05:14
be reduced to the hotel situated on the outskirts of the town used to belong to
00:05:21
my family that's all
