Hello students, this is the first video I'm projecting. In this first video I'm addressing 00:00:02
the production factors. I'm addressing the information you have on page 86, 87 and 88 00:00:08
of your book. But before I address production factors, it's important you remember what 00:00:16
we've seen in class, which is the basic components of economic activities. If you remember, there 00:00:24
three basic components of any economic activity, which are production, 00:00:31
distribution, and consumption. I'm addressing production. We are not dealing 00:00:36
with distribution, which remember is the transfer from producers, the transfer of 00:00:42
goods or commodities from producers to consumers, and we are not dealing with 00:00:47
consumption, which is the use of those goods. We are dealing with 00:00:52
production and it's important you first of all remember there are three main 00:00:58
production factors there are three main factors needed to produce to make any 00:01:06
good any product any commodity which are natural resources capital and technology 00:01:12
and finally labor you know we usually consider technology as part of capital 00:01:19
and I'll explain why. But before that, let's get started by natural resources. 00:01:27
The first production factor, the first factor we need to produce any good or 00:01:34
product is natural resources. Natural resources are basically raw materials, 00:01:39
are the materials, the elements provided by nature that have an economic use. And 00:01:45
And there are two types of natural resources, which are renewable and non-renewable. The renewable natural resources are those natural resources or raw materials that can be renewed over a short period of time. 00:01:52
Think, for example, about water. And non-renewable are those natural resources or raw materials that cannot be renewed over a short period of time. Think about oil, petroleum, for example. 00:02:09
It's important I mention some of the main problems raised by resources within the context of our world, within the context of our economy. 00:02:26
Those problems are overuse and some international conflicts related to the control of natural resources. 00:02:39
Regarding the overuse of some natural resources, this is a very important problem today 00:02:48
because if consumed at a higher rate than the renewable some resources can be 00:02:55
exhausted that's the case for instance of oil of petroleum that's also the 00:03:01
problem of coal coal carbon there are also problems which have to do with 00:03:07
international conflicts because the desire to control limited natural 00:03:14
resources oil for for example leads to worse and international conflicts today 00:03:20
the second production factor we need to mention is capital and we are as I've 00:03:28
told you we have included technology within the context of capital the first 00:03:36
idea you must remember is that capital is the combination of non-natural 00:03:43
resources needed to production in other words capital is what businesses and economic agents 00:03:49
invest in order to produce any good any commodity product and so on um we usually say there are 00:03:56
three types of capital physical capital this could be physical capital the factories and the machinery 00:04:06
used to produce here you can see an image second type of capital is financial capital here the 00:04:13
financial capital is the money economic agents companies businesses usually borrow from from 00:04:24
banks and they used to invest to buy machines to buy factories and to hire labor and labor 00:04:33
could be the third type of capital labor could be human capital by labor I mean I 00:04:42
simply mean the workers hired to work in a company in a factory and of course we 00:04:50
must include here as I've said technology and technology is the 00:04:59
combination of knowledge methods and procedures used in the production 00:05:03
factors. Somehow technology is part of the factories and machinery. Finally, and 00:05:08
this is very important, the last production factor is labor. I could say 00:05:16
actually is the most important production factor. Labor is the physical 00:05:23
or also intellectual effort made by people in order to produce material 00:05:29
goods and services by labor I mean workers and when we deal with workers 00:05:35
labor there is a series of points we must take into account first point has 00:05:42
to do with the employment situation of labor of workers and we distinguish 00:05:48
between active population or labor force on the one hand and inactive population 00:05:53
on the other hand active population is made up of the company of the sorry 00:05:59
combination of people who are in paid work in other words this is the employed 00:06:05
population but labor force or active population also includes unemployed 00:06:13
people okay people who are not employed but are looking for a job inactive 00:06:19
population includes those people who are not working and they are not available 00:06:26
to work. Think about pensioners or students. The second important point about labor is labor market. 00:06:34
In our world, in our economy, there is a labor market. There is a market in which the supply 00:06:45
for work, which is to say the workers look for work, and the demand for work, the companies 00:06:53
need for work converge okay if you have any doubts about it we will work on it 00:07:00
in class and finally I must mention another point related to labor which is 00:07:07
labor problems the problems related to workers the main problems related to 00:07:15
labor today in the context of our economy in the context of our world are 00:07:23
are those related to unemployment, job insecurity, 00:07:28
youth unemployment, which is especially important 00:07:33
in such countries as Spain, 00:07:37
gender discrimination and child labor. 00:07:40
Child labor is especially a problem 00:07:43
in underdeveloped and developing countries. 00:07:46
I will end here, we will continue in class. 00:07:53
