Good morning, we are Irene Hernando and Carlos La Peña.
00:00:00
We are representing Los Altos School from Manzanares El Real in Madrid.
00:00:03
We are reunited today with the purpose of searching possible solutions
00:00:07
to one of the most important problems in our society,
00:00:10
child work and child exploitation.
00:00:14
We have titled our presentation,
00:00:16
It's not just figures, it's a reality.
00:00:18
We have decided our campaign to concentrate on the young people
00:00:22
in order to make them aware of the problems
00:00:26
and provide them a critical mind.
00:00:29
Child exploitation, also known as child slavery,
00:00:32
is the use of children in formal or dangerous jobs
00:00:35
for the family economy or other ends.
00:00:38
This definition was an inflection point for us to start searching.
00:00:41
We have noticed that international organizations
00:00:45
haven't even bothered to define and limit this term.
00:00:48
So in response to this, we have started searching
00:00:52
to find out what people thought and knew about this subject.
00:00:55
In this strange season, it's really hard to interview people around us,
00:01:00
so we have created a survey in Google Forms.
00:01:04
In the image zone, we can see some of the ideas we collected from our community.
00:01:08
After some research, we have come to the realization
00:01:14
that there's not an official definition for the term itself.
00:01:17
We believe that it's important for the international organizations to come to terms with the definition,
00:01:22
so we can create limits around this concept.
00:01:28
Here we can clearly see how we have divided this problem in five separate categories.
00:01:32
To solve a problem, it's important to now eat down its causes and consequences,
00:01:38
so we can later solve it in a more effective way.
00:01:43
Also, we have kept in mind the importance of the SDOs in each category.
00:01:46
The first category is consumerism.
00:01:53
Consumerism is one more concept that is talked to us like a value since we're kids.
00:01:56
We develop some kind of necessity around consuming.
00:02:02
Many agents, such as the constant publicity, programmed obsolescence,
00:02:05
and the continuous coming out of new products that almost push us to consume unconsciously.
00:02:10
Next, we have got the contribution to the beauty standards.
00:02:17
Companies create campaigns in which the main point of attention is the product,
00:02:21
being used by an ideal person that fully represents the occidental beauty standards.
00:02:26
We, in a completely unconscious way, start to relate the surreal idea of perfection with the product
00:02:31
so we start to feel an irrational desire of unknowing it.
00:02:38
In third place, we have the anonymity in the directory of large companies.
00:02:43
We, as a society, should start demanding for those people
00:02:49
who are responsible of these systematic mistakes
00:02:52
to be consequent of their actions and become an active part of the solution.
00:02:55
Continuing with the childhood robbery,
00:03:01
these companies don't have any laws that limit this kind of work
00:03:03
so they can freely hire minors who are forced to spend their childhood working inside factories.
00:03:07
Next, we have the dehumanization of figures.
00:03:13
A good way of changing this would be trying to name some of the people who are part of these big numbers,
00:03:17
so we can remember that behind every number there are names, surnames, stories, faces, emotions, etc.
00:03:23
With the help of our community, we have collected possible solutions to each problem.
00:03:32
Later, we will go deeper in the different promoting methods we have used to promote our campaign inside and outside our school.
00:03:37
It's not enough for us just to wish for everything to change.
00:03:45
We have to make a change for things to actually change.
00:03:50
To conclude, we have taken the risk of actually defining this term.
00:03:54
We hope we have given it the importance it really has.
00:03:59
First, we want to start with the definition of work.
00:04:02
In our native language, Spanish, the word work comes from the Latin, tripalium.
00:04:05
Tripler means torture, pain causing, torment, etc.
00:04:11
Infant, from Latin, infantis, means the one who doesn't talk.
00:04:16
Child work, any and all activity done by children that keeps them from their natural rights.
00:04:22
It is important for the work of SDOs to not end in a project, but to go further and organize real actions.
00:04:28
Thanks for your attention. We are really excited to see your work perspective in order to search for an effective solution to this really big problem.
00:04:37
Finally, we would like to thank the UNESCO and the Red PEA for giving us the opportunity
00:04:45
of being an active part of the solution of one of the biggest problems in our nowadays
00:04:53
society.
