2002 was presidential election year in Ecuador. The contest has put the smallest Andean country on the front pages of international newspapers. The European Union has deployed across the country 70 observers since the beginning of September in response to an invitation from the government, and in keeping with its commitment to support democracy in Ecuador.

In one of the province's villages, La Union, voters have lent their support to the same 00:01:11

The challenge for other parties in La Union and other rural areas is simply to survive. 00:01:18
Trying to find candidates is practically impossible. 00:01:26
Even trying to set up a polling station is a challenge for Jovani Popis, the electoral 00:01:29
coordinate in Santa Ana. 00:01:34
The difficulty facing the electoral coordinator is having to work with people who are unable 00:01:40
to either read or write. 00:01:48
That's the real challenge. 00:01:53
However, even at La Union, the first round produced a big surprise. 00:01:55
All over the country, the results proved the pollsters wrong. 00:02:03
The two candidates elected for the second round came from outside the traditional political 00:02:07
