illustrating history imagine that someone works as a painter sculptor engineer architect 00:00:00
mathematician physicist chemist and also studies anatomy poetry music medicine geology and botany 00:00:12
and imagine that he doesn't just study but also conducts experiments in those areas a little over 00:00:18
500 years ago, this person actually existed, and he was the genius Leonardo da Vinci. 00:00:25
He was born in the Italian city of Vinci, Tuscany, in 1452, and from an early age, he 00:00:32
showed extreme curiosity. 00:00:39
Once, while strolling through the region, Leonardo saw a dark cave. 00:00:41
He was scared of it, but his desire to explore the cave was stronger than his fear. 00:00:46
This passion for knowledge took him to the city of Florence, 00:00:53
where the intellectual and scientific community was at the time, 00:00:57
and where, at the age of 17, he became an apprentice to Verrocchio, a famous artist. 00:01:01
Verrocchio's studio was in fact a creativity and research center. 00:01:08
There, Leonardo was able to participate in debates, studies, and experiences far beyond painting techniques. 00:01:11
He could exercise all his talent in different areas of knowledge. 00:01:18
In 1482, at the age of 30, Leonardo moved to Milan, where he painted one of his most famous pieces, The Last Supper. 00:01:21
It was a fresco in the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. 00:01:31
Besides his artistic work, Leonardo also executed engineering work, systems for military defense, and floats. 00:01:36
Among papers found long after his death, there were detailed studies of inventions very similar to what we now know as the bicycle, the helicopter, the hang glider, the parachute, and many more. 00:01:43
Between the years of 1503 and 1507, Leonardo painted the most famous painting of all time, the Mona Lisa, also known as La Giaconda. 00:01:56
Through the perfect balance of dimension and proportion, it gives us the impression that the painting is alive, 00:02:07
as if Mona Lisa with her enigmatic smile follows us with her eyes. 00:02:14
Everything about Mona Lisa is fascinating and mysterious. 00:02:19
His paintings were not only the result of artistic study, but scientific studies as well. 00:02:22
Leonardo studied anatomy and the physiology of nerves and muscles in order to better represent the human body. 00:02:27
Because of his extreme perfectionism, several pieces of his work were incomplete. 00:02:34
Leonardo da Vinci achieved unprecedented fame in the history of the arts. 00:02:39
His work reveals the creative and exploratory human capacity. 00:02:44
He inspires all of us, men and women, to constantly seek knowledge. 00:02:47
