For thousands of years in the making, what began as part of a religious festival honoring the Greek god Zeus in the rural Greek town of Olympia has today become the greatest show of sporting excellence on Earth. 00:00:00
The inception date in 776 BC became the basis for the Greeks' earliest calendar, where time was marked in four-year increments called Olympiads. 00:00:26
What could it be? Why, it's the Olympic Games, of course. 00:00:37
Competition fosters excellence, or so thought the ancient Greeks. 00:00:41
In addition to sporting events, contests were held for music, singing, 00:00:45
and all yourself in classical literary works like Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid. 00:00:50
Even mythical heroes appreciate a good contest every now and then, wouldn't you say? 00:00:58
For the first 13 games, the ancient Greek Olympics featured just one event, the 200-yard dash. 00:01:03
But over time, new exciting contests like boxing, chariot and mule racing, 00:01:11
and even a foot race where the competitors wore a full suit of armor enticed many hopeful champions into the Olympic Stadium. 00:01:18
the combined running jumping wrestling javelin throwing and hurling the discus event known as 00:01:26
the pentathlon inspired world-class competition and the pancration a no-holds-barred fight where 00:01:34
only biting and eye gouging were prohibited ensured the toughest men were victorious 00:01:42
and victorious they were nobody tops the local baker coroibus who in 776 bc became the very 00:01:47
first olympic champion and we'll never forget orsippus of megara the 720 bc olympic victor 00:01:56
who tore away his loincloth so he could race unimpeded inaugurating the ancient greek tradition 00:02:05
of competing in the nude. 00:02:11
Now there's a winning streak if ever we've seen one. 00:02:13
But all good things must end. 00:02:17
In 391 A.D., the Christian Roman emperor Theodosius 00:02:19
banned pagan practices, 00:02:23
so the world soon bid a fond farewell to the Olympic Games. 00:02:25
But just like those early Pankration athletes, 00:02:30
you can't keep a good one down. 00:02:33
And 1,500 years later, in 1896, 00:02:36
the modern Olympic Games kicked off in Athens, Greece. 00:02:39
Today, the Summer and Winter Olympics bring international 00:02:44
world-class athletes together by the thousands, 00:02:48
uniting fans by the billions for the world's foremost 00:02:52
sporting competition. 00:02:56
Citius, Altius, Fortius, three cheers for the Olympics. 00:02:58
