You're watching UNICEF television. 00:00:00
Bursting with energy in their white and green uniforms, 00:00:03
the students at Ndabo Primary School in northern Nigeria 00:00:07
are having a great time in their physical education class. 00:00:11
Across the street, 12-year-old Jamila is going door to door, 00:00:17
selling vegetables. 00:00:22
It has been four years since she quit school. 00:00:24
I was in Ndabo Primary School, 00:00:29
but I dropped out in 2003 when I was in class two. 00:00:33
I dropped out because I didn't have a school uniform. 00:00:37
My mother wanted me to work to make some money 00:00:40
so that hopefully one day we can afford the uniform again. 00:00:43
Poverty has forced many girls like Jamila 00:00:47
to leave their education behind in northern Nigeria, 00:00:51
a country where 40% of school-aged children are not in school. 00:00:55
Like Jamila, 10-year-old Wasila remembers the shock 00:01:02
when her parents asked her to drop out a year ago. 00:01:06
My parents asked me to drop out and work so that I can support them. 00:01:11
I was not happy and didn't like it, 00:01:18
so much so that I almost felt I had a fever. 00:01:20
Fortunately for Wasila, she didn't miss out on school for too long. 00:01:25
With the $50 million funding provided by the U.K., 00:01:30
free learning materials have been distributed by UNICEF 00:01:34
in more than 700 schools throughout northern Nigeria, 00:01:38
lifting a big financial burden for many families. 00:01:42
While she was out of school, 00:01:46
I heard that her school had gotten instruction materials, 00:01:48
including books and school bags, and that attracted my attention. 00:01:51
I decided to send her back to school 00:01:55
believing that she would get all of these items with no cost to me. 00:01:57
Through the Girls' Education Project, 00:02:02
water pumps are being installed in many schools 00:02:05
as well as separate latrines for boys and girls. 00:02:09
Teachers also benefit receiving extra training 00:02:13
to help them provide better education for the children. 00:02:16
Wasila studies hard and has become the top student in her class. 00:02:23
She takes her education seriously, 00:02:28
knowing fully that there are still many girls in Nigeria 00:02:31
who couldn't afford to give their dreams a second chance. 00:02:35
In Bakure, northern Nigeria, 00:02:41
this is Kunle reporting for UNICEF Television. 00:02:43
