Hi, it's Elizabeth here. And I've written a small summary of the Miwok people, which is a Native American Nations. And I have written this as a reading comprehension. So I'm going to read it so everyone can hear the pronunciation and how the words sound. And I'm also going to play some Native American music. 00:00:01
Okay, the Miwok people. The Miwok are a Native American nation that originates from northern 00:00:28
and central California. There are subgroups of Miwok that include the Plains Miwok, 00:00:40
the Valley Miwok, the Coast Miwok, the Lake Miwok, and the Bay Miwok. The environment varied 00:00:48
from where the Miwok people lived or what subgroup they belonged to. The Miwok people 00:00:55
harvested acorns from the California black oak tree and it was their main food source. 00:01:01
They also ate bulbs, seeds, and fungi. They hunted animals and ate grasshoppers. There were no meal 00:01:08
schedule and the Miwok people only ate according to appetite. The Miwok lived in tool houses. 00:01:17
Usually, these houses were made from a cone-shaped frame of wooden poles placed over a basement-like hole dug in the ground. 00:01:25
Then the frame would be covered with mats woven from tool reeds and packed with a mound of earth over it to keep it well insulated. 00:01:36
Today, most Miwoks live in modern houses and apartments just like you. 00:01:47
Miwok people didn't wear much clothing. 00:01:54
Miwok men generally went naked, and Miwok women wore only short grass skirts. 00:01:57
In mountain villages, though, women sometimes wore buckskin dresses instead, 00:02:03
and the men wore leggings and deerskin shirts. 00:02:09
The Miwoks wore moccasins on their feet while hunting or traveling, 00:02:13
though they usually went barefoot in their own villages. 00:02:18
The Miwok people have a fascinating and interesting culture. 00:02:22
Thank you for listening. See you next time. 00:02:30
