Greetings friends, my name's Cosimo, allow me to be your guide to the sights, sounds 00:00:00
and smells of the Italian Renaissance. 00:00:12
So what is the Italian Renaissance? 00:00:17
Well, the word Renaissance is a French word that means rebirth. 00:00:19
A rebirth is a new beginning, and a new beginning it was. 00:00:26
Between the 14th and 17th centuries some really creative things started happening in Europe, 00:00:31
especially in drawing, sculpture, painting and architecture. 00:00:35
During the 1300s Europe rose out of the dark ages. 00:00:44
Bubonic plague was a disease which wiped out a lot of the population. 00:00:47
The country was made up of independent city-states. 00:00:53
The city of Florence was ruled by a family of bankers, the Medici's. 00:01:04
They used their vast wealth to sponsor the arts and sciences. 00:01:08
The true impact of the Renaissance could really be seen in the visual arts. 00:01:12
New styles and techniques emerged. 00:01:16
The influence of geometry and mathematics could be seen as artists strived for perfection. 00:01:18
By the mid 14th century paintings had very flat, decorative, religious themed images. 00:01:27
All this changed however, with the arrival of painters like Giotto and Fra Angelico. 00:01:32
They studied artists from ancient Greece and Rome, and drew from real life. 00:01:37
They painted with egg tempera, which was colour pigment mixed with egg yolk. 00:01:43
They also used gold, which could be flattened as thin as leaves, and could be brushed onto the paintings. 00:01:48
Our good friend Johannes Gutenberg helped spread these new ideas to the rest of the world with his invention, 00:01:53
the printing press. 00:01:59
By the early Renaissance artists painted people more realistically, and placed them in three 00:02:05
dimensional settings. 00:02:10
The introduction of perspective revolutionized the way buildings and backgrounds were painted. 00:02:11
The architecture at the time was also inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. 00:02:20
Common features included columns, pilasters, domes. 00:02:25
The most famous dome of all was Florence Cathedral, designed by none other than famous engineer 00:02:28
and architect Filippo Brunelleschi. 00:02:34
These years saw an explosion in creativity. 00:02:40
Compositions, meaning where people and objects are placed in a picture, became balanced, 00:02:43
proportioned, perfected. 00:02:49
The ideas for artworks no longer came just from religion. 00:02:51
Oil paints took longer to dry and could be applied thickly or thinly, allowing artists 00:02:55
to give their works a much more realistic feel. 00:03:00
These artists became the superstars of their day. 00:03:04
A true Renaissance man could be a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, all rolled 00:03:06
into one. 00:03:12
Some were even inventors, like our good friend Leonardo da Vinci. 00:03:14
Michelangelo Bonarroti was also a painter and sculptor, whose crowning achievement was 00:03:18
the sealing of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. 00:03:23
So what was life like for the men, women, and children of the Renaissance? 00:03:27
Men worked as bankers, farmers, or goldsmiths. 00:03:32
Women were either silk weavers, midwives, seamstresses, or nuns. 00:03:35
Children didn't have it easy either. 00:03:40
From the time they learned to put one foot in front of the other, they were expected 00:03:41
to work just as hard as the grown-ups. 00:03:45
This was a time of style. 00:03:51
What you wore and how you wore it was very important. 00:03:53
Women wore sweeping gowns, and every man had to wear a hat. 00:03:56
They would show off their new threads at a variety of public and sporting events. 00:04:01
Their pastimes included chess, bullfighting, and jousting. 00:04:05
Most music at the time was composed solely for the church. 00:04:12
However, as with all the arts, new styles were introduced, and music was also made simply 00:04:16
for people's entertainment. 00:04:22
As with any great action comes a reaction. 00:04:27
The perfection achieved in the High Renaissance gave way to a style called Mannerism. 00:04:29
This brought about a much more stylized approach to painting. 00:04:36
Cooler colors were used, figures were put in more unusual settings, and were painted 00:04:39
with longer bodies. 00:04:44
The Renaissance, which began in Italy, shook everything up and lasted hundreds of years. 00:04:48
It led to big achievements in art and science, and changed how people think. 00:04:54
Until next time, mi amici, arrivederci. 00:04:59
