In this way, we are doing a compost project with the international program Global Scholar. 00:00:00
We want to involve the whole school community and we will explain you what compost is and 00:00:14
how it is made, and what you need to do. 00:00:24
The compost bin is placed in our school orchard. 00:00:31
What is compost for? 00:00:37
The compost is our natural transformation process 00:00:39
of organic waste that turns into nutrients 00:00:43
and serves to fertilize the land. 00:00:47
How is it made? 00:00:51
We can divide our waste into two groups. Green waste is grass clippings, coffee grounds or tea bags. 00:00:52
Brown waste is dry plant material, eggshells, little pieces of cardboard. 00:01:05
But it's important to place green waste and brown waste in different layers. 00:01:12
The compost is ready to use when it is dry and crumbly and also has an earthy smell. 00:01:18
The volume of the pile is reduced around half and the organic items are not looked for. 00:01:26
This process can take from one month to a year. 00:01:33
What type of waste can we put into the compost bin? 00:01:37
You can put grass clippings, tree leaves, coffee grounds, lettuce, potato peels, banana peels, paper without ink, avocado skin, and egg shells. 00:01:40
We have to keep all this out of the compost bin. 00:01:58
Meat, fish, dairy products, oil, plastic, metal, pet food, colored paper, coal, any chemical substances. 00:02:04
This is plants or cooked food. 00:02:15
You are going to have a trash bin like this in your break time to put your compostable waste in it. 00:02:17
It's got a poster at the top so that you always know what to put and what to keep out of it. 00:02:27
At the end of the break time, together with a teacher, you will have to go to the compost bin, where you have to throw the collected waste. 00:02:36
After, you clean your little bin with water and use that water to irrigate the plants. 00:02:52
Finally, you take your bin to the whole of your building to use it again the next day. 00:03:25
