COVID-19 is a new type of coronavirus which is affecting all parts of the world. 00:00:01
The main symptoms of COVID-19 are cough, fever and shortness of breath. 00:00:07
There are simple things to do to help keep yourself and others safe from this virus. 00:00:13
These include washing your hands often with soap for at least 00:00:19
20 seconds and avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands. 00:00:23
If you have symptoms, you should stay at home for 7 days to self-isolate. 00:00:27
If you live with someone who has symptoms, then you should stay at home for 14 days. 00:00:34
The first cases of coronavirus in the UK were confirmed on 31 January 2020 in Newcastle, England. 00:00:40
By 1 March 2020, cases were found in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. 00:00:48
On the 11th of March, the World Health Organisation declared the outbreak a pandemic. 00:00:57
As a result of this, some airlines in the UK cancelled flights and the government advised 00:01:03
people in the UK to avoid travelling if it wasn't essential. Also, the UK government advised people 00:01:09
to practice social distancing, to avoid contact with others and to avoid going to bars, restaurants 00:01:17
and theatres. However on the 20th of March Boris Johnson finally told bars, restaurants, gyms, 00:01:24
cinemas etc to close. All sport and music events have been cancelled. On the 18th of March it was 00:01:32
announced that all schools in the UK would close and people were told to work from home if possible. 00:01:41
Boris Johnson and the UK government have been criticised for the way that they have handled the situation. 00:01:47
Measures taken by the UK government have not been as serious as those taken by the Spanish government. 00:01:56
However, it is likely that the UK will soon be on total lockdown like here in Spain. 00:02:03
As of the 22nd of March, there were around 5,600 confirmed cases in the UK. 00:02:09
