In this video I'm going to explain you some characteristics of population that 00:00:03
we need to know if we want to analyze the population of a place. Let's start 00:00:08
with birth and death rate. Birth rate is the number of babies born in a place in 00:00:13
one year. Meanwhile, death rate is the number of people who die in a place in 00:00:20
one year. The difference between the number of people who are born in an area 00:00:26
In one year and the number of people who die is called natural growth. 00:00:32
To calculate the natural growth we need to subtract the number of deaths, that is the 00:00:37
death rate, from the number of births, that is the birth rate. 00:00:42
Let's explain now migration. 00:00:47
Migration refers to people who move from one country to another. 00:00:50
There are two types, emigrants are people who leave their country to live in another 00:00:53
one. And immigrants are people who come to live in a new country. The difference 00:00:57
between the number of immigrants and the number of immigrants is called net 00:01:05
migration. To calculate the net migration of a place we need to subtract the 00:01:09
number of immigrants from the number of immigrants. But why do you think people 00:01:15
migrate? Some of the reasons are to find a job, to improve their education, to 00:01:19
improve life conditions or to run from war and natural disasters in their 00:01:25
country. Life expectancy is another characteristic of population and refers 00:01:30
to the number of years that a person is expected to live. According to employment 00:01:36
we can talk about active population and inactive population. Active population 00:01:41
includes all adults who are able to work. This can be employed people who work or 00:01:47
unemployed people who look for a job. Inactive population includes different 00:01:54
groups for example children, retired people, people who can't work, students or 00:01:59
people who don't want to work. Finally there is something called population 00:02:05
density. Population density tells us the number of inhabitants that live in a 00:02:10
square kilometer. To calculate population density we need to divide the number of 00:02:15
people in an area by the star facing square kilometers of that area 00:02:21
