Good morning, so in this third evaluation your oral task will be to produce a book presentation
00:00:00
podcast. This podcast will be worth 10% of your mark and it has to be informative, entertaining
00:00:09
and we'll talk more about that in a moment. So what will you be asked to do? Well you
00:00:20
have to produce a narration of what happens in the novel. You also have to organise other
00:00:25
ideas that I'm going to be asking you to do in a sequence. You have to use ICT here, so
00:00:32
I'm going to basically ask you to record your audio on your mobile phone and then to save
00:00:39
it and send it to me in an email. There will be a guide to help you to be able to do this
00:00:45
step by step and because this is an oral text you have to remember that you have to
00:00:50
pronounce very clearly, use intonation, use rhythm, be as fluent as you can but also as
00:00:56
natural as you can because it is a podcast. So you will be asked to plan, to participate
00:01:03
in a conversation, to use your digital competency well, to select your ideas, to begin, to maintain,
00:01:12
to continue a conversation and those ideas have to be clearly expressed and I will be
00:01:23
helping you with a model text here so don't worry about that. What else can I say here
00:01:28
that's in the curriculum? That you have to describe the people, the places, the events
00:01:36
in the novel that take place and narrate those events. You also have to explain your opinions
00:01:42
and feelings towards this novel. Remember that the purpose is to give information, to
00:01:48
persuade if the listener should read or not the novel that you're presenting and so you
00:01:55
have to really entertain and don't forget that you have to speak very very clearly and
00:02:01
use intonation because it is and it's meant to be a podcast and you're meant to entertain.
00:02:08
So what resources will I be asking you to use? Well primarily your mobile phone so that
00:02:14
you can record the text that you've prepared and you will also have to find a classmate
00:02:19
who's prepared to be the host of this podcast. In other words the person who asks you the
00:02:25
questions about the novel that you're recommending. In the next few lessons then we've got lots
00:02:31
of work to do. Firstly you have to choose your novel and read it. Then you have to hopefully
00:02:37
consult my model, the eight sections. These are the points that I would like you to talk
00:02:45
about in your podcast. Hopefully you will also listen to my podcast and use it as a
00:02:50
model for your own. I've also prepared a script of the questions that your host will ask so
00:02:56
that you don't have to do too much work there because that's not the important part. The
00:03:03
important part is the information that you provide about the novel. You have to remember
00:03:07
that if you'd like me to publish your work in an EducaMadrid platform that in this audio you
00:03:14
must use an avatar name, not your real name because you're underage. Find a classmate who
00:03:20
will be your podcast host and then practice. Practice that interview. Now either before the
00:03:28
recording or after the recording I'd like you to peer evaluate each other's work to improve the
00:03:37
podcast using the rubric that I will give you. When you're happy with your audio there will be
00:03:45
a step-by-step guide to record, save and send the podcast to me. Remember that when you send this
00:03:52
podcast to me it is crucial that the audio has your name, your two surnames. This is very, very
00:04:00
important and not your avatar name. So what will I be looking for when I give you a mark? Well you
00:04:08
have to produce a coherent text. It has to be a text, an audio text that presents the book. I will
00:04:15
be looking for your ability to narrate, inform about the novel, express your opinions about the
00:04:23
novel. I'm going to see if you have done a little bit of research on the author. I need to make sure
00:04:31
or you need to be able to show me that you can organize your ideas, structure them, produce a
00:04:38
message that's coherent. Use the sort of words that we use to describe novels like character,
00:04:45
setting, plot and also provide your opinion. This isn't going to be difficult for you to do. You
00:04:52
will have to show me that you can begin, maintain, finish a conversation, pronounce clearly, fluently
00:05:00
and use ICT to be able to record the task, send me the audio, follow those instructions and that's
00:05:08
it. So remember in summary you're going to do a book presentation podcast. It is very important
00:05:17
that the audio text you send me has your full name. I will be showing you the steps to do this
00:05:26
and it is also important that if you'd like me to publish your work that in the actual audio you use
00:05:33
an avatar name. If you don't use an avatar name, an invented name, then I can't publish your work.
00:05:41
What else? Yes, that when you send me that audio if you'd like me to publish the work,
00:05:49
for example in the school newsletter, it's important that you tell me in the email that
00:05:55
you give me permission to publish your work and you give me permission to use the creative
00:05:59
commons share alike. Yes, the audio must be three to five minutes long and so the last thing left to
00:06:05
say is, well, what do you have to include in this audio? Well, you must complete your text with the
00:06:14
instructions I'm going to give you below. So here we go. Number one, I'd like you to give me
00:06:21
information when you finish reading your novel about the title of the novel, the author's name,
00:06:26
the genre, was it a novel or is it a novel that is adventure, thriller, mystery, romance,
00:06:33
and a little bit of information about other work that the author has produced. Have any of
00:06:42
this author's novels been adapted to film? Has he or she won prizes? Number two, describe how you
00:06:48
came across the novel. Three, describe the setting. Where does the story mostly take place
00:06:56
and if you can, when it takes place. Fourthly, I'd like you to summarise the plot. Is it told
00:07:04
chronologically? Is it a first person or a third person narrator, an omniscient narrator? Are there
00:07:12
flashbacks, flash forwards? Who's involved in the story? In other words, who are the main characters
00:07:18
and what is the conflict? Because every story for it to be entertaining must have some kind
00:07:25
of conflict or problem or challenge. Now, number four, you have to be really careful
00:07:30
not to spoil the novel. In other words, because the purpose is for us to go away and read this
00:07:38
novel, you mustn't tell us something that could spoil that for us. Then I'd like you to be able
00:07:44
in your podcast to either read a few quotes or explain a moment in the novel that was your
00:07:51
favourite moment and very important, explain why. Try not to be basic here and say, oh because it
00:08:00
was interesting or it was good. Really think carefully about why you think this is one of
00:08:08
your favourite moments in the novel. Describe the main character's personality. You should explain
00:08:13
if this is a strong or a weak quality and try to refer to the novel to say why the character is
00:08:20
like that, but without spoiling the novel for us if we want to read it. Then you need to explain
00:08:27
who you recommend this novel, whom you recommend this novel to and again why is very important.
00:08:34
Try to avoid things like, because it was interesting, evaluate the novel with stars.
00:08:40
Would you give it 5 out of 5, 10 out of 10 and why? And finally, explain what you've learned
00:08:45
from this novel. How has it changed you? All novels teach us lessons or make us think about
00:08:54
themes and so how has this novel made you think about one of the themes or the characters in the
00:09:06
novel carefully? So as I said before, the rubric, what will I be looking for? Very, very important.
00:09:12
The audio that you send me must have your name and your two surnames. This is crucial for me to
00:09:19
be able to give you an evaluation mark. And then to get the top points you have to obviously produce
00:09:26
a book presentation podcast with six, seven to eight items that I've mentioned before.
00:09:32
So the information has to be detailed and relevant and remember that the purpose is
00:09:38
to inform, to entertain, to persuade me to read or not read the novel. Your language has to be
00:09:44
coherent, your ideas have to be well organized and remember to try to use that vocabulary that
00:09:50
I spoke about. Words like the character, the setting, the plot. It is an oral text so you have to be loud,
00:09:57
very loud, pronounce very clearly, try to be fluent. You're good at this so don't be worried.
00:10:07
And then I will also be giving you marks for sending me the audio with your full name.
00:10:14
If you want me to publish your work you must use an avatar name. You must also tell me clearly
00:10:21
if you do or do not want me to publish your work and if you do want me to publish your work to use
00:10:28
the Sharealike logo, the Creative Sharealike logo and then you get points for sending me this work
00:10:35
before the deadline or on time. And this is it. Thank you very much. I hope it's
00:10:42
provided some useful information on the podcast.
