In the year 2000, leaders from 189 countries agreed on a vision for the new millennium. 00:00:00
They wanted to end extreme poverty in all of its forms. 00:00:07
So they made a list of eight goals, called the Millennium Development Goals, 00:00:10
and they wanted to achieve these goals in 15 years. 00:00:14
One of the leading organizations working to fulfill these goals 00:00:18
has been the United Nations Development Program, or UNDP. 00:00:21
We're present in more than 170 countries and territories. 00:00:25
We championed the goal so that people everywhere would know what they were and how people could do their part. 00:00:29
We funded projects that helped fulfill the goals. 00:00:35
We helped countries accelerate NDG progress by breaking down the silos and working across sectors. 00:00:38
We acted as scorekeeper, helping countries to track progress. 00:00:44
As a result, the number of people that live on less than $1.25 per day has dropped by more than half. 00:00:48
The number of primary school-age kids who don't go to school, down by almost half. 00:00:54
The number of people getting life-saving treatment for HIV, increased by over 15 times. 00:01:01
Child mortality, down by almost half. 00:01:07
As much progress as we have made together, there's still a lot more to do. 00:01:11
Over 800 million people are still living on less than $1.25 a day. 00:01:16
One in nine people on our planet goes to sleep hungry each night. 00:01:21
Deforestation remains alarmingly high in many countries. 00:01:26
Oceans are becoming more acidic, threatening food security and marine ecosystems. 00:01:29
And about one of every six adults in the world is illiterate. 00:01:34
Two-thirds of them are women. 00:01:38
We think those are tough numbers, and so do leaders from the countries where we work. 00:01:40
so in September 2015 they agreed on a new set of goals to help finish the work 00:01:44
we all started in 2000 the new goals are called the sustainable development goals 00:01:51
or SDGs we have made significant progress in the last 15 years and we 00:01:56
think there's plenty of room for hope for action in the next 15 years today 00:02:03
the world is more connected by technology we know more about how to 00:02:09
balance the three pillars of sustainable development social progress economic 00:02:14
growth and environmental protection however our climate is changing our 00:02:18
planet is transforming and there are more people on earth than ever before we 00:02:25
at UNDP believe everyone can have enough of what they need living within our 00:02:31
planetary boundaries and we are working around the world to make this happen our 00:02:35
Our goals to reach by 2030 are to eradicate extreme poverty, 00:02:41
protect our environment, and much more. 00:02:44
UNDP has 50 years of experience working with countries 00:02:47
to make this a more prosperous, healthy, inclusive, 00:02:51
and sustainable world. 00:02:54
Join us. 00:02:56
