High-speed railway axis of south-west Europe: Three new high-speed lines will link major cities on the Iberian Peninsula (Madrid-Barcelona-Lisbon-Porto) with the French high-speed network, bringing the Spanish capital to within four hours of the French border by the Atlantic and the Mediterranean coasts. The new lines will slash current journey times by as much as 60 % (Madrid will be linked to Lisbon and Barcelona in 2,25 hours), providing significant new competition to both air and road transport on key routes. Several sections of these new lines will also be used for freight transport, allowing through traffic from France without gauge changes. The European Commission has designated Etienne Davignon as European coordinator for this priority axis, which should be finalised between 2009 and 2015.
