Good morning, everyone. Eli, Joaquin, and I are going to read some poems in celebration of the school day of non-violence and peace, which looks January 30th. 00:00:00
We hope these poems inspire you to look at peace at the day of your choice. And without further ado, I'll read mine. 00:00:10
This is a poem called The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry. 00:00:20
I chose this one because it makes a connection of peace with nature, which I think is really beautiful because it's all around us. 00:00:24

When despair grows in me, and I wake in the night at the least sound, in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, 00:00:35
I go and I lie down where the wood drape rests and his beauty on the water, and the great height of the fields. 00:00:45
I come into peace, I come into the peace of wild things 00:00:51
Who do not tax their lives with poor thought and grief 00:00:54
I come into the presence of still water 00:00:58
And I feel above me the day-blind stars 00:01:00
Waiting for their light 00:01:03
For a time, I rest in the grace of the world 00:01:04

So the poem that I'm going to be reading 00:01:19
is called O Son of Real Peace by Walt Whitman. 00:01:21
And I selected this poem because it's part of one of my favorite collections of poetry by Baldwin, 00:01:24
called Leaves of Grass. 00:01:30
So this is a poem that was written following the end of the American Civil War, 00:01:32
and it's about basically looking forward to the future and hoping that... 00:01:36
So without further ado, this is O Son of Real Peace. 00:01:42
O Son of Real Peace, O hasten and light, 00:01:46
O free and ecstatic, O what I hear, prepare me, roar before thee. 00:01:50
Oh, the sun of the world will ascend, dazzling, and take his height. 00:01:56
And you too, oh my ideal, will surely ascend. 00:02:00
Oh, so amazing and broad, up there with splendid, darting and burning. 00:02:04

This poem that I'm going to read is short, but it says a lot about peace being in harmony with others, regardless of race, social status, or personal circumstances. 00:02:50
The title of the poem is I Dream a World by James Langston Hughes. 00:03:12
I give a world where man, no other man will squander, where love will bless the earth, and peace its paths avoid. 00:03:19
I give a world where all will know sweet freedom's way, where greed no longer saps the soul, nor avarice blights the day. 00:03:33
A world, I dream, where black or white, whatever race you be, will share the bounties of the earth, 00:03:44
and everyone is free, where wretchedness will have its end, and joy, like a pearl, attends the needs of all mankind. 00:03:53
