Now, we're going to go over what we've done in class today.
00:00:00
Today we talked about social classes in ancient Rome.
00:00:02
By the end of this video, we'll be able to distinguish between the two classes in ancient Rome at this time.
00:00:06
We know that these were the patricians and the plebeians.
00:00:11
We're also going to be able to explain the role of each of these class groups at the time.
00:00:14
So what do we know about patricians?
00:00:19
We know that they were rich members in society.
00:00:22
They had all the power and made all the decisions in ancient Rome.
00:00:24
They controlled the government and the army.
00:00:28
They served in the Senate which was a council which made important decisions
00:00:30
in Rome. They could also be military generals or governors. We can see from
00:00:33
the picture that they wore expensive and decorated clothes. The men wore long
00:00:38
togas and the women wore stolas. They also lived in a house called the domus.
00:00:42
We'll be seeing more of this in the next section of our website. On the other
00:00:47
side we find the plebeians. They were the poorer class of people. They made up most
00:00:53
of the population but they had no power. They were farmers, traders and served in the army.
00:00:58
They were given a dull payment of free grain. This was so that they would stay loyal and support the
00:01:04
rule of the patricians who made up very little of the population. We can see from the picture that
00:01:09
the men wore very plain clothing, a short tunic and the women wore a plain stula. They lived in
00:01:15
an insulate which was an apartment block. It was nothing like a domus and we will be talking about
00:01:21
this in the next section of our website finally i want you to think about the role of women at this
00:01:26
time do you think they were equal to the men do you think they went to school and if so did they
00:01:32
learn the same things as the boys and if they didn't go to school what do you think they did
00:01:38
instead how do you feel about this is it fair we'll have a discussion on this in the next class
