It's just too much. 00:00:00
Did you know that there are over 15 billion web pages? 00:00:06
To make sense of it all, we need ways to pluck out the best pages and save them for later. 00:00:09
We have choices. 00:00:13
We could bookmark or add to favorites in our web browser. 00:00:14
Nah, it quickly becomes messy. 00:00:17
Plus, these bookmarks are tied to only one computer. 00:00:19
This is the old way. 00:00:22
There's a new way that doesn't use a browser. 00:00:23
It uses a website. 00:00:26
This is called a social bookmarking site, and the one we'll use today is called Delicious. 00:00:27
It makes bookmarking more useful and fun. 00:00:32
We'll focus on three things. 00:00:34
How to get started with bookmarking, how bookmarks are organized by tags, and why this kind of 00:00:36
bookmarking is social. 00:00:40
First, go to delicious.com to sign up for a free account. 00:00:42
While you're signing up, you'll see an easy way to add a couple of buttons to your browser. 00:00:46
These are important. 00:00:50
The tag button is how you'll add new bookmarks to the website. 00:00:51
On any website, you can click tag to save that site as a Delicious bookmark. 00:00:55
Easy. 00:01:00
Consider this example. 00:01:01
You're a teacher who often uses the web to find math lessons for eighth graders. 00:01:02
You're overwhelmed by all the sites. 00:01:06
There are just too many to remember. 00:01:08
Using Delicious, remembering sites is as easy as tagging them. 00:01:10
Here's one. 00:01:14
Oh, nice. 00:01:15
Perfect. 00:01:16
Here's what happens when you tag a site. 00:01:17
A new window opens and asks for more information. 00:01:19
You can add keywords or tags that describe the site. 00:01:22
These will help you find bookmarks later. 00:01:26
You might tag this site Algebra, Best Of, Tutorial, Math, and Homework. 00:01:27
Then click save to save it on the Delicious website. 00:01:32
When you save a page like this, two things happen. 00:01:35
First, the site is saved with all your other bookmarks on delicious.com. 00:01:38
Second, the tags are saved in a list of all your tags. 00:01:41
You just repeat this process for every site you want to save. 00:01:45
This is bookmarking. 00:01:49
Let's fast forward two months to make our second point, why tags are so important. 00:01:50
Let's say you now have 100 bookmarked sites. 00:01:55
Chaos, right? 00:01:57
Well, since you added tags, you have a way to sort the bookmarks by the tags you assigned. 00:01:58
To find all the sites about Algebra, you click the Algebra tag and voila, 100 becomes 3. 00:02:03
All your bookmarks are now more findable thanks to tags. 00:02:09
But that's only part of the fun. 00:02:12
Now let's look at the social part of bookmarking to make our third point. 00:02:13
Think about your fellow teachers. 00:02:17
Couldn't they benefit from seeing your bookmarks? 00:02:18
Well, they can. 00:02:20
Delicious bookmarks are public. 00:02:22
This means that your friends and peers can see your bookmarks and use your tags just 00:02:24
like you. 00:02:28
That's why this is called social bookmarking. 00:02:29
Your bookmarks can benefit other people. 00:02:31
Think about it this way. 00:02:34
You start bookmarking Algebra sites and your peers can see the interesting sites you find. 00:02:35
Then they start bookmarking too. 00:02:40
Within a few weeks, a group of teachers are all bookmarking their favorite math websites 00:02:42
and because they're all public, everyone discovers new and relevant materials. 00:02:46
Together, you create a network that produces a steady stream of interesting and useful 00:02:50
websites, all organized by tags on the Delicious website. 00:02:55
The lesson is that social bookmarking sites take a world of chaos and make it orderly. 00:02:58
Remember, there are three steps to get started. 00:03:03
First, go to Delicious.com to sign up and add the buttons to your browser. 00:03:06
Second, start bookmarking sites with tags. 00:03:10
And third, be social. 00:03:14
Notice how useful and fun other people's bookmarks can be. 00:03:16
