Hi, today we're going to talk about the language we'd use to express speculating and predicting.
00:00:02
To talk about possibility in the future, we can use may, might, or could, plus the base form of the verb.
00:00:13
Example, it might rain
00:00:24
There is a possibility it rains
00:00:30
Same way we can use it may rain
00:00:34
or it could rain with no difference in meaning
00:00:39
We use may or may not for the negative
00:00:43
but we do not use could not
00:00:49
Let's take a look at the following example
00:00:53
In this case, we could say something like
00:00:56
He may not pass the course
00:01:01
But we would never use he could not pass the course
00:01:03
Because we will mean something completely different
00:01:08
To make predictions in the future, we can use
00:01:11
Will, probably, plus the base form of the verb
00:01:18
I think it will probably rain
00:01:23
Depending on how certain or convinced we are in our speculations, we can establish the following scale, where want is the 0% certain and will is the 100%.
00:01:28
This way, we can follow the sequence starting with 0% want, then probably want, might or may or could, will probably, and we'll find will when we're 100% sure that something is certain.
00:01:42
will happen. It's your turn now. Take a look at the following picture, and imagine you're
00:02:00
100% certain of what's about to happen here. How would you express it? With A, they may
00:02:09
fall, or with B, they will fall? The correct answer is they will fall. We often make predictions
00:02:17
with the first conditional too. Remember the structure. If plus subject plus present simple
00:02:30
plus subject plus will. If the hotel has a Wi-Fi, I'll check my emails. We can also use may, might,
00:02:39
or could if a prediction is only a possibility. If you refresh the page, it might load. Class
00:02:50
practice. Write down your speculations based on the visual prompts. Now use the first conditional
00:03:02
that's will, won't, might or could for these sentences here. What will, might, could or may
00:03:29
you do if this happens? What could you do if the king of Spain pays us a visit? What if you travel
00:03:40
to china what will you do if a witch comes and turns us into frogs what might you do if you have super powers what if a nuclear bomb explodes and if you can time travel what if you win the lottery
