Hello, my name is Karina and I would like to tell you about where my family comes from. 00:00:01
My parents were born in El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America. 00:00:19
They immigrated to America when they were 20 years old. 00:00:23
Growing up, I would visit El Salvador once a year and spend summers with my grandparents. 00:00:27
I remember driving through lush, green farmland and feeling amazed by the many volcanoes. 00:00:33
There are, in fact, 22 volcanoes in this tiny country. 00:00:41
Thankfully, though, only six of them are active. 00:00:45
Volcanoes are the perfect backdrop for the colorful street art and hilltop villages. 00:00:50
The higher we would drive, the more we would encounter coffee fields. 00:00:57
El Salvador is a major exporter of coffee beans. 00:01:02
In fact, it ranks in the top 20 list of countries that export the most coffee worldwide. 00:01:06
Apart from enjoying delicious coffee, I also love the food. 00:01:14
The national dish is called pupusas. 00:01:19
Pupusas are thick, handmade tortillas served with a filling inside. 00:01:22
My favorite ones are pupusas filled with pork, cheese, and refried beans. 00:01:27
They are served with fermented cabbage slaw. 00:01:33
My grandparents live on a farm with cows, bulls, chickens, and roosters. 00:01:37
During my visits, I would play soccer with my cousins, eat pupusas, and relax on a hammock. 00:01:42
They are everywhere. 00:01:48
During birthday celebrations, we would have piñatas and listen to a mariachi band. 00:01:51
I enjoyed spending my summers there. 00:01:56
