Good morning. We are at the public school Carlos Cano, located in Spain, specifically in the town called Fuenlabrada, which is in the community of Madrid. 00:00:00
Our service learning project is called Universally Accessible Gardens. 00:00:11
The objectives we seek are the following. 00:00:16
To promote the environmental awareness of the participants and their families. 00:00:19
To create an accessible garden for the children of the Spiral Association. 00:00:22
generate healthy leisure options in their free time for children of Espiral who are at social risk. 00:00:26
The main curricular area in which this service-learning focuses is Natural Science, 00:00:33
but other areas such as Spanish language and literature and art are also involved. 00:00:39
We will begin explaining the development of service-learning. 00:00:45
It all started with a letter from the association introducing themselves to our students and asking 00:00:52
them how they spent their leisure time. After reading it we went on to hold an assembly and 00:00:59
think of ways to help this association. We continued to investigate what Spiral was, 00:01:07
where it was and which people were in charge of running it. In this way we found out that it was 00:01:15
way close to the school and that we could contact them to learn more about it. A few days later, 00:01:21
we visited their facilities with Monica, the educational coordinator of the association. 00:01:28
We held a classroom assembly to share what we have learned about the association and what we 00:01:35
know and can use to help them. The next step has been to raise the question of what we want to do. 00:01:40
We knew that we wanted to make a vegetable garden in our nature area where the Spirit 00:01:49
Association could come to the school in the afternoon. We also thought that it would be a 00:01:55
great idea to make a vertical garden for them to take care of feed in their facilities and we got 00:02:00
down to work. To make all these proposals it is important to us what do we need to know to carry 00:02:07
them out and we made a vehicle canva where we put everything we need to carry out these proposals 00:02:15

We used wheelchairs to move around, we looked for clues in our garden areas, 00:02:48
we learned interesting facts about European countries and the main crops of each season 00:02:52

in the afternoon at our school. Once we knew what we wanted to do, we went on to carry out 00:03:05

reused materials, wood, plastic bottles, ropes, we started to design our vertical garden. Once 00:03:21
this proposal is finished, Spiral Association will take it to them so that they can take care of it 00:03:28
in their installation. They don't have enough space for a vegetable garden and we have offered 00:03:34
them this other healthy leisure alternative. Working on the vertical garden we saw the 00:03:40
importance of the substrate to keep the plants well cared for. A father from the school came 00:03:47
to explain us the composter and how to pour on ecological compost. Since that day we have 00:03:53
a vermicomposter with California worms in the classroom and a large compost bin at school. 00:04:02
The fifth grade will be in charge of the weekly tasks that we have to do with the compost bin. 00:04:09
We realized that the children needed a guide with the care of the different plants in the vertical 00:04:18
garden so that they could take good care of them. We started working as a team to make it and with 00:04:24
the help of the ONCE foundation we included braille in it to make it as inclusive as possible. 00:04:31
We investigate in small groups how to make a vegetable garden and the necessary materials. 00:04:38
We look for funding in the entities with which we collaborate and then we will make a guide 00:04:44
with decisional crops as inclusive as possible . 00:04:50
The following activities will take place in the coming months. 00:04:58
Regarding the evaluation, our idea is to use two main tools. 00:05:02
self-evaluation rubric and co-evaluation. Regarding the rubric we will take as 00:05:06
indicators the contribution of ideas, the research process, the creation of the 00:05:11
portfolio and the development of the inclusive guide. Another evaluation tool 00:05:16
will be the CAHUDA, where the service-learning conceptual learning will 00:05:22
be evaluated. We will continue to make a whole presentation to the 00:05:27
classrooms and families, where we will explain the whole process, follow it and the learning 00:05:32
achieved. 00:05:37
We will end with the inauguration day of our vertical garden and our garden for the Spiral 00:05:38
Association, in which will be invited all the people of the educational community, the 00:05:45
people responsible for the Spiral Association, political entities of our environment, the 00:05:51
Councilmen of Education, the Director of the District Board. 00:05:57
