Today we are going to learn about conductors and insulators. 00:00:08
We use different energy sources like solar energy, wind energy and petrol to produce 00:00:18
electricity. 00:00:25
But how does electricity travel from its origin to our homes? 00:00:26
Let's see. 00:00:36
Electricity is produced at power stations. 00:00:40
From power stations, electricity travels along power lines with pylons. 00:00:44
Electricity flows through cables in streets. 00:00:52
And finally, electricity arrives to the electrical sockets in our homes. 00:00:56
And to carry electricity, there are two types of materials that we have to take into account, 00:01:03
conductors and insulators. 00:01:09
Let's see them. 00:01:12
On the one hand, we have electrical conductors, in Spanish, conductores eléctricos, which 00:01:14
are the materials through which electricity flows very easily. 00:01:22
Examples of electrical conductors are copper, steel and seawater. 00:01:28
On the other hand, electrical insulators, in Spanish, aislantes eléctricos, which are 00:01:35
the materials through which electricity doesn't flow. 00:01:43
Examples of electrical insulators are plastic, wood and glass. 00:01:48
There is also another type of conductors and insulators, thermal conductors and thermal 00:01:56
insulators. 00:02:03
Thermal conductors transfer heat very easily, for example, metals. 00:02:05
That's why it is very dangerous to touch a metal saucepan when we are boiling water, 00:02:12
because metal transfers the heat and we can hurt our skin. 00:02:17
Thermal insulators don't transfer heat easily, for example, plastics and wood. 00:02:24
