Hi there. Today we're in the city of Boston in the state of Massachusetts.
00:00:00
This is a world-class city with a friendly, welcoming feel to it.
00:00:18
Fennell Hall Marketplace and Quincy Market in the heart of Boston are wonderful places to go shopping or to enjoy a meal with friends.
00:00:23
But this area also has great historic significance for Boston.
00:00:41
It was here that Boston's Sons of Liberty used to meet.
00:00:47
They are a group formed to challenge the harsh law and order forced on the colonies by Great
00:00:51
Britain, especially in the form of taxes.
00:00:56
This is a statue of Samuel Adams, one of America's founding fathers.
00:01:01
I'm here with Officer Pagan from the Boston Police Department to find out about law and
00:01:10
order here in Boston.
00:01:14
Can you tell us a little bit about the police force here in Boston?
00:01:16
Yes, the Boston Police Department was founded in 1854 with 250 officers.
00:01:19
We currently have 2,174 police officers sworn and 751 civilians,
00:01:25
and we are a national model for community policing.
00:01:33
What's the greatest part of your job?
00:01:37
The greatest part of the job is the community interaction,
00:01:39
being out in the community and being able to help someone.
00:01:43
And sometimes you have very bad days, and that one person that says thank you for doing your job makes the whole day better.
00:01:47
What are the most common problems you face trying to maintain law and order here in Boston?
00:01:55
The main problem is getting the community to understand that not all police officers are bad
00:01:59
and that we are here to do our job and take care of everyone in our community.
00:02:03
Do you have any special advice for visiting tourists?
00:02:07
I say come to Boston.
00:02:11
We are a historical city with a lot of stuff to do.
00:02:12
And we ask you that if you come to Boston, just vueltate bien.
00:02:17
Beacon Hill is the most affluent area of Boston.
00:02:25
This neighborhood is known for its elegant 19th century townhouses and narrow brick streets with working gas lamps.
00:02:28
The Swan boat ride on the water here has been running since 1877.
00:02:37
The two resident live swans, named Romeo and Juliet, are local celebrities.
00:02:42
At 240 meters, the John Hancock Tower is the tallest building in Boston.
00:02:49
Its glass design shows reflections of the different styles of architecture surrounding it.
00:02:56
Established in 1636, Harvard is the oldest university in the United States.
00:03:04
Its history, influence, and wealth have made it one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
00:03:09
Rowing is a sport often associated with Boston and Harvard.
00:03:15
I'm here with Dan at the Harry Parker Boathouse on the Charles River.
00:03:24
Dan, why is rowing so popular here?
00:03:28
Well, Boston is one of the meccas of rowing in the U.S., and there's a big tradition, a long tradition here in Boston.
00:03:31
We have the head of the Charles Regatta every year. It's the world's largest rowing event.
00:03:37
What's the hardest part to master?
00:03:41
master? The hardest part I think you'll find today is the balancing of the boat.
00:03:43
The boats can be very tippy and even if you're a strong athlete you first have
00:03:49
to learn how to balance the shells. Can we try it? Sure. Oh great.
00:03:53
I'll see you next time in Williamsburg, Virginia.
