Vídeo en inglés sobre la formación y uso de la voz pasiva.
The passive voice, basic information, what is it, when is it used, how is it conjugated?
00:00:00
To understand the passive voice, we need to compare it to the active voice, and to be
00:00:12
aware of the fact that the first element that we utter in a sentence is our focus of attention.
00:00:16
So in a sentence such as Peter made a cake, an active voice sentence, the subject is the
00:00:22
agent, the performer of the action, and it is our main focus, what we care about.
00:00:27
That is followed by a verb, made, and an object, which is the person or thing that directly
00:00:32
receives the action of the verb.
00:00:37
It is a sentence such as this with a direct object that we can turn into the passive voice.
00:00:39
On the contrary, in the passive voice, there is a change in the order of elements of our
00:00:47
sentence.
00:00:53
One of the first elements that we have is the person or the thing that receives the
00:00:54
action of the verb, what was previously our object, but is now our main focus of attention.
00:00:58
So in a cake was made by Peter, we care about the cake itself or the baking, not who actually
00:01:03
baked it.
00:01:09
That passive subject is followed by a passive verb, and then at the end of the sentence,
00:01:11
the agent may be mentioned, but it's not necessary.
00:01:17
If we choose to do so, we use preposition by.
00:01:20
So when is it used?
00:01:26
So since the point of the passive voice is to focus on the action and its consequences
00:01:28
rather than the agent, it is used many times when the agent is unknown or obvious, such
00:01:34
as in this sentence, somebody cleaned the room, or the cleaner cleaned the room is less
00:01:42
likely to be used than the room was clean, since we know the room was cleaned by a person
00:01:47
and that was probably a cleaner.
00:01:52
It is used as well when we want deliberately to avoid the agent, when we intentionally
00:01:57
want not to mention the agent, sometimes, for instance, a mistake was made is a sentence
00:02:04
that has been used by many politicians in the past when we want to admit that something
00:02:11
went wrong, but that they don't know who is to be blamed.
00:02:15
They want to say that they were to blame for it.
00:02:19
If you follow this link, you can see some of the examples in real life.
00:02:22
So how is it formed?
00:02:28
Let's take a sentence in the active voice, such as the postman delivers the mail.
00:02:30
We need to change the order of elements.
00:02:34
The first element to be used is our previous object, the receiver of the action, the mail.
00:02:37
Then we change the verb into the passive voice.
00:02:43
A passive voice verb has two elements.
00:02:46
To begin with, the verb to be, conjugated in whichever tense we need to.
00:02:48
So delivers is a present simple, so we need a present simple is.
00:02:54
And then the participle of the verb, in this case, the lexical verb.
00:03:00
The verb is to deliver, so we say delivered, and our passive voice verb is delivered.
00:03:05
And finally, if we want to mention the agent, we use preposition by and place it at the
00:03:12
end of the sentence by the postman.
00:03:16
So our passive voice sentence would be, the mail is delivered by the postman.
00:03:18
A few notes.
00:03:25
So if by any chance our sentence in the active voice starts with no one or nobody, in the
00:03:27
passive voice, it becomes a negative sentence, such as is the case here.
00:03:34
No one turned the light would become the light was not turned on.
00:03:38
Now, when we have a phrasal verb, when we have a verb with a preposition followed by
00:03:44
a preposition in the active voice, that preposition remains behind the verb in the passive voice.
00:03:49
So they talked about the issue becomes the issue was talked about.
00:03:56
Let us have a look at some tenses in the passive voice.
00:04:03
This is a chart with tenses in the active and the passive voice.
00:04:07
As you can see, there are two elements in our passive voice tenses.
00:04:12
To begin with, the verb to be conjugated, and then the participle.
00:04:16
Let's take, for instance, the future simple.
00:04:20
If I say I will do it in the active voice, then I need to conjugate the verb to be in
00:04:23
the future simple.
00:04:29
So my passive verb would start with will be instead of will do.
00:04:30
And then finally, I use the participle done.
00:04:35
So it becomes it will be done.
00:04:39
Here you have some more complex tenses.
00:04:43
Notice the fact that continuous tenses are not generally used in the passive voice.
00:04:47
So that's all for now.
00:04:55
I think that now you're ready to start practicing.
