The reawakened ancient city, archaeological areas of Pompeii. 00:00:00
This is Mount Vesuvius, it overlooks the Bay of Naples in Italy. 00:00:07
A volcano, it suddenly erupted with tremendous force on the 24th of August, AD 79. 00:00:13
The city of Pompeii, 10 kilometers to the southeast, was buried under a layer of volcanic ash in a matter of moments. 00:00:21
Careful excavations have revealed how people lived and died in ancient times. 00:00:31
It's just as if time had stopped. 00:00:37
The city was believed to have had a population of over 10,000 people and was filled with life. 00:00:41
This is a tavern. 00:00:47
On the pub wall, there are paintings of people playing games. 00:00:51
There were vine and olive trees in the Vesuvius foothills. 00:00:56
Vegetables and crops were abundant. 00:01:01
A variety of shops lined the streets. 00:01:04
Located on Mediterranean trading routes, a plentiful supply of fish and agricultural produce made the people of Pompeii wealthy. 00:01:07
Here a mosaic of a guard dog. 00:01:18
People had courtyards in their homes. 00:01:22
They enjoyed luxurious living. 00:01:26
Gourmet dishes were a status symbol, extravagance was a virtue. 00:01:29
Nightly feasts continued till dawn. 00:01:34
All of it was buried under the ash in an instant. 00:01:39
Those who failed to escape the hot gases of the volcanic cloud were suffocated and covered in volcanic ash. 00:01:42
The ash set and human bodies decayed, leaving hollow shapes. 00:01:50
Archaeologists poured plaster into these hollows and made plaster casts of the bodies to learn about their moment of death. 00:01:57
The casts tell us of their last moments in detail. 00:02:06
People trying to escape fell and died. 00:02:10
A mother here was clutching her child until the last moment. 00:02:19
The child is about four years old. 00:02:24
Here lovers trying to protect each other. 00:02:30
The people of Pompeii lost their lives in an instant. 00:02:40
This world heritage continues to remind people of the frailty of human life. 00:02:46
