Hello my dear students, with this video we are going to distinguish between regular and
00:00:00
irregular verbs to form the past simple tense in English.
00:00:08
First of all I want to look at the following examples.
00:00:13
Susan played basketball with her friends yesterday.
00:00:18
I went to Ireland last summer.
00:00:23
The verb in the first sentence is played and it is regular.
00:00:27
The verb in the second sentence is went and it is irregular.
00:00:33
Now let's concentrate on the regular verbs.
00:00:39
Look at the following verbs.
00:00:45
Listened, helped, watched, returned, played, visited, looked and worked.
00:00:47
As you can see, all these verbs have added the suffix ed at the end to form the past
00:00:57
simple tense.
00:01:06
Next we are going to practice a little bit.
00:01:09
Can you transform these regular verbs?
00:01:13
Answer, ask, remember, cook, transform, climb, finish, scream and talk.
00:01:16
Now it's your turn to use the verbs in sentences.
00:01:30
Use three of these verbs and write three sentences in the past simple form in your
00:01:35
notebook.
00:01:40
Ready?
00:01:41
But careful, not all regular verbs add the suffix ed.
00:01:42
There are some rules when adding the suffix that imply some spelling changes.
00:01:53
Let's look at them one by one.
00:01:58
Verbs ending in e only add d, for example arrive, arrived.
00:02:01
Verbs ending in consonant plus y change the y for an i and add ed, for example study,
00:02:08
studied.
00:02:16
Monosyllable verbs ending in the pattern consonant-vowel-consonant double the last consonant and add ed,
00:02:17
for instance chat, chatted.
00:02:26
And finally the verb travel doubles the last consonant in British English but not in American
00:02:30
English.
00:02:38
OK, now it is the turn of irregular verbs.
00:02:39
Please, can you look at these verbs again?
00:02:48
Ate, drank, built, went, wrote, lost, had, begun.
00:02:53
Do they have anything in common?
00:03:03
The answer is no.
00:03:08
You must learn them by heart from the irregular verb list that you have.
00:03:10
But I'm sure that you are familiar with some of them, don't you?
00:03:17
OK, I'm aware that learning irregular verbs is one of the most hated aspects when studying
00:03:23
English, so here you are some useful groupings to learn irregular verbs more easily.
00:03:30
The first group changes the final d for a t, as in build, built.
00:03:37
Others add t, as in dream, dreamt.
00:03:45
The next group changes the end for u, blow, blew.
00:03:49
Next group changes the vowel i for a, as in sing, sung.
00:03:56
The next group changes the vowel to o, like write, wrote.
00:04:02
Or others change to ot, bring, brought.
00:04:07
Between verbs are those verbs that remain the same, as it is the case of cost, cost,
00:04:13
and mixed verbs have no regular pattern.
00:04:19
This is the case of be, was, were, or have, had.
00:04:22
I hope this video has helped you to learn and understand better how to distinguish between
00:04:27
regular and irregular verbs.
00:04:33
And remember, learning can be fun!
00:04:36
Bye for now!
