Do you care about Africa? Do you want to fight poverty and win a prize? 00:00:00
Then take part in the European Commission's Development Youth Prize. 00:00:07
When my mom realized that I had won the trip to Africa, she was a bit jealous. 00:00:12
You can win a trip to Africa too. Have a look at dyp2007.org. All the information's there. 00:00:19
Are you creative? You're interested in what the EU is doing for overseas aid? 00:00:28
Then this competition is made for you. 00:00:32
Hi, I'm Gerli Nugis from Estonia. I am one of the winners of the Development Youth Prize 2006. 00:00:38
Gerli, who is now a journalism student, took part in the competition, and she won a five-day trip to Rwanda. 00:00:45
The Development Youth Prize is a competition organized by the European School Net and the European Commission. 00:00:53
The competition is meant for the students aged 16 to 18 all over Europe. 00:01:00
All you have to do is enter a piece of artwork which demonstrates creatively how you perceive overseas aid, like Gerli. 00:01:07
The problems of Africans are like facts that enter the one ear and exit from the other. 00:01:16
But from the competition, I learned that you have to knowledge the problems before you can actually solve them. 00:01:22
This is her work. 00:01:34
In Africa, springs disappear before you can notice them. 00:01:36
When we ourselves know that they have the problem, we can help. 00:01:40
Gerli wasn't the only winner. Each of the 27 member states chose a prize winner. 00:01:47
I absolutely love the cartoon, which was made by the students from Slovenia. 00:01:53
Then this Wake Up Africa idea with a coffee cup, which was made by Kate from Latvia. 00:02:04
In November 2006, Gerli and her history teacher went to Brussels and met the other prize winners. 00:02:13
I had so much fun meeting the other contestants, I mean the winners and the runner-ups. 00:02:20
We had this midnight night tour, which I'm not sure I can tell about. 00:02:25
But it was fun. 00:02:32
Six months later, all the prize winners joined Louis Michel, the commissioner, on an official visit to Rwanda. 00:02:35
During those five days, Gerli made friends with Rwandan students, met the president, 00:02:41
and visited quite a few projects which receive European overseas aid. 00:02:46
The Nkunda Bana project touched Gerli most of all. 00:02:52
The point of the project was to take care of the children who lost their parents during the genocide. 00:02:56
The trip also allowed her to talk to the commissioner and understand what he wants to achieve. 00:03:07
Her memories of this trip will always stay with her. 00:03:17
I spent two days to do the work, but what came from it has been the experience of my life. 00:03:20
It has been wonderful. 00:03:27
I definitely learned what development cooperation means. 00:03:29
It's nice to know that in every country of the European Union I have a place to sleep. 00:03:35
So I have a friend in every country. 00:03:41
If you want to present your vision of development and take part in the Development Youth Prize, you know what to do. 00:03:45
