Good morning guys, this is Mr. Schultz again and today we're just going to read together a very interesting article about coyotes. 00:00:01
So the coyotes are relative of the dog, wolf and jackal, right? So they're cousins. 00:00:18
Like it's relative, it is a predator and mostly eats other animals, okay? 00:00:24
So it's a predator and mostly eats other animals. 00:00:29
So we can use context clues to figure out that predators, okay, are animals that eat other animals, all right? 00:00:33
It will, however, eat a wide variety of foods, including insects, fruits, and vegetables, all right? 00:00:40
So now we know what coyotes eat. 00:00:46
They're found throughout most of North America, from Mexico and Central America to Canada and Alaska, all right? 00:00:48
So as I said, they're all over the place. 00:00:54
The color of its coat depends on where it lives. 00:00:55
Mountain coyotes are darker than those living in the desert. 00:00:59
okay you have pictures right here as you can see this one has a nice brownish light color okay 00:01:03
like the wolf coyotes like groups or packs the pack is usually smaller number than a wolf pack 00:01:12
all members of the pack are usually related the pack will often divide into pairs to hunt 00:01:17
okay so the hunting pairs female coyotes have a litter of pups once a year okay so we know 00:01:22
our first vocabulary word, predator, and we just found 00:01:29
our second one, litter, okay, so 00:01:33
let's use context clues to figure out what a litter is, okay 00:01:37
so a litter has an average of 6 pups, alright 00:01:41
so if a litter has an average of 6 pups, alright 00:01:45
and we know that a pup, okay, like here in this picture 00:01:49
is one baby coyote, and a litter has an average 00:01:53
of six pups then what would be a litter so a litter would be a pack of newborn baby jackals 00:01:57
or because i mean um coyotes because we're talking about coyotes in this case but uh it would be um 00:02:05
a pack of newborn mammals in general okay if we keep on reading okay wolves and coyotes compete 00:02:11
for the same prey animals since the coyote is smarter than the wolf wolves usually drive the 00:02:19
coyote out of any shared territory. The coyote adapts easily to new areas. Unlike the buffalo 00:02:24
or wolf, the coyote's range increased after human populations expanded across the continent. 00:02:29
For example, the coyote was not native to New England. Once New England settlers eliminated 00:02:35
wolves, however, the coyote moved in. Scientists who have been studying the coyote believe it is 00:02:40
better than the wolf at living in human areas. Okay, so coyotes are now found in most large 00:02:45
urban areas, they might find abundant supply of food in these areas since coyotes are willing to 00:02:51
eat garbage, rodents, and even small pets such as cats. Scientists estimate that as many as 2,000 00:02:56
coyotes might be living in the Chicago area because of its adaptability. The coyote is not an endangered 00:03:02
species or even a threatened one. It has been classified as least concern, which means it has 00:03:08
the lowest risk of extinction. Now guys, if you want to figure out the author's purpose, right, 00:03:13
in whatever the text that you're reading might be you should ask yourself questions such as 00:03:18
which features of the coyote um does the uh author value most of the coyote all right why does the 00:03:23
author describe the coyote in such details etc and if we pay attention to the answers for those 00:03:30
questions like for example why is he citing so many details of the coyote you will realize that 00:03:36
he's giving you statistics is he giving you numbers he's giving you hard facts he even 00:03:41
mentioned scientists okay so he's talking about um they're estimated to be at around 2000 coyotes 00:03:44
in chicago etc this being the case what do you think would be the author's purpose right he's 00:03:52
giving you very accurate information okay and that's the word information obviously this is 00:03:58
an article right and in articles the author's purpose is to inform you um so as you can see 00:04:03
you can ask yourself questions 00:04:11
if you're having trouble determining 00:04:14
the author's purpose 00:04:16
and at the same time we just learned about coyotes 00:04:17
which is 00:04:20
a very North American animal 00:04:21
so we have learned about an animal 00:04:24
that lives all throughout the United States 00:04:26
thank you very much for your attention guys 00:04:28
and I hope you have a good day 00:04:33
bye 00:04:34
music 00:04:35
