UNICEF's Guy Degen reports on the construction of pre-schools ensuring early education and development for Cambodian children.
You're watching UNICEF Television.
00:00:00
Every weekday morning, children aged 3 to 5 in Ban Tayai Krang village attend classes
00:00:03
at the non-formal community preschool.
00:00:09
For children such as 5-year-old Natar, simple and stimulating activities are essential for
00:00:12
early childhood education, and to help them enter primary school at the right age.
00:00:17
Only less than 14% of 3 to 5-year-olds in Cambodia are enrolled in preschools, and mostly
00:00:23
in affluent urban areas.
00:00:29
UNICEF's Child Rights Program in Cambodia, known as Seth Korma in Khmer, is working with
00:00:32
rural communities to build preschools with access to clean water and latrines.
00:00:38
They also train volunteer teachers and provide basic school supplies.
00:00:43
Currently the Cambodian government doesn't have the necessary funds to provide early
00:00:48
childhood education to all Cambodian children, especially in the rural areas.
00:00:52
There are big problems with children enrolling in school at a later age, dropping out of
00:00:56
school or repeating classes, and UNICEF believes that community preschool education actually
00:01:01
better prepares children for formal schooling and aids them in their psychosocial development.
00:01:07
For Natar, the two-hour preschool classes of a morning provides a positive daily routine
00:01:13
in her life.
00:01:18
Her parents are divorced, her mother lives in Phnom Penh and works in a garment factory.
00:01:20
Natar lives with her grandmother together with her elder sister and cousin.
00:01:25
Her grandmother Savun believes preschool is giving Natar a good head start in life.
00:01:30
She says without her father, Natar is much more vulnerable.
00:01:37
Community preschool gives her the education she needs.
00:01:41
In the past year, UNICEF has assisted around 900 preschools in six rural provinces, helping
00:01:45
to bring early education to some 20,000 children.
00:01:51
Natar says she's looking forward to going to primary school next year when she turns
00:01:55
six.
00:01:59
Having attended community preschool since she was three, Natar will be on track to enrol
00:02:01
at her local primary school with her friends at the right age.
