Hello, year three. So we are going to be doing some speaking practice about superlatives.
00:00:01
That sounds like a very big, scary word, but it's actually very simple.
00:00:07
So don't worry. What is a superlative?
00:00:13
A superlative is when an adjective is at the highest form that it can be, for example, strongest or fittest.
00:00:18
No one can be stronger than the strongest or fitter than the fittest.
00:00:28
So how do you make an adjective into a superlative?
00:00:35
The most common way is by adding E-S-T to the end of the word.
00:00:40
We have three examples here.
00:00:47
So strong is strongest. Kind, kindest. Fast, fastest.
00:00:49
There are two other simple ways to make a superlative.
00:01:00
When a word is only three letters long, you need to repeat the last letter and then add EST.
00:01:07
So you can see here, fit, we've added an extra T and added EST to make fittest.
00:01:16
Big, with an extra G, an EST, biggest.
00:01:27
There is one exception, however, which is old.
00:01:34
Old doesn't need an extra D. It is simply oldest.
00:01:39
Next, we have funny.
00:01:48
You will see when the word ends in a Y, you must replace that with an I, with E-S-T.
00:01:51
So funny is funniest.
00:02:01
Now, using what we have just learned, can you make sentences with these superheroes?
00:02:04
So, for example, number one, she is the bravest.
00:02:17
Can you now do number two with strong? Great.
00:02:23
And what about number three, clever? Number four, funny.
00:02:33
Number five, fit. Good. And now last, number six, kind. Very good. Now, I want you to think about
00:02:45
your own family. And looking at these adjectives here, young, old, tall, short, slow, and fast.
00:03:16
Can you complete the sentence with the person of your family and also the ending to the superlative?
00:03:30
I have made a note here. If it applies to you, then you simply say, I am the youngest in my family.
00:03:41
If I was answering number one, I would say, my brother is the youngest.
00:03:52
Could you now complete number two with old? Good. Now, who could be tall in your family?
00:03:58
And now the opposite, short. Number five, slow. This could be running or swimming.
00:04:28
And number six, fast. There we are. Great work.
