Hello everyone, this is Kori. Today we are going to be talking about Spain in the Middle Ages. 00:00:00
First, we'll go over our timeline. We had Roman Hispania, the Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo, 00:00:10
and Al-Andalus. In the Roman Hispania, we had the arrival of the Visigoths in the year 416. 00:00:20
In 476 was the fall of the Roman Empire 00:00:30
Next we have the Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo 00:00:36
In 507 we had the Kingdom of Toledo 00:00:41
In 711 we had the Moorish Invasion 00:00:45
Next we have Al-Andalus 00:00:50
First we have the Emirate 00:00:54
In 711 it was dependent 00:00:58
in 756 it was independent, in 929 was the Caliphate, 1031 Typha kingdoms, and 1492 00:01:01
was the Christian conquest of Granada. Here we have the breakup of the Roman Empire. 00:01:17
In 476, the Roman Empire fell, marking the beginning of the Middle Ages. 00:01:29
From the 6th century onwards, three major civilizations dominated the former Roman Empire. 00:01:40
We had the Byzantium, the Visigoths, and the Muslims. 00:01:52
the Eastern Roman Empire was the Byzantium German tribes who created feudal kingdoms 00:01:58
were called the Visigoths and they settled in Hispania then we had the Muslims followers of 00:02:08
Islam. Over here in our map you can see future feudal Europe is marked by the 00:02:17
dashed line. Down here with this darker green is the birthplace of Islam. The 00:02:30
lighter green shows the Islamic territory on the death of Muhammad in 00:02:42
632 and these red arrows show Islamic expansion. Now let's talk about the 00:02:47
Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo. In 507 the Visigoths founded a kingdom in 00:03:03
Hispania with Toledo as its capital. The Visigoths conquered most of the Iberian 00:03:12
Peninsula. Government. The king made the laws, but sometimes he had special meetings with nobles 00:03:21
and bishops. These meetings were called the Council of Toledo. Economy. Most Visigoths 00:03:35
lived in small rural communities dedicated to arable and livestock farming. 00:03:49
The people were poor. They did not have money. They were not wealthy. 00:03:59
Religion. 00:04:07
King Ricardo converted to Catholicism in 589, and this united the Visigothic kingdom under one religion. 00:04:09
So the king converted to Catholicism, and the Visigothic kingdom was all under one religion. 00:04:20
Culture. 00:04:35
Visigoths learned to speak Latin. Saint Isidoro of Seville was a bishop and an important thinker. 00:04:35
He was the first Christian to write an encyclopedia. Alright, that's all for now. Goodbye! 00:04:47
