Have you ever wondered what it would be like if we didn't keep the record of history? 00:00:00
Imagine that you wake up one day and realize that you have no memory of the past. 00:00:09
You don't know when you were born or where you came from. 00:00:14
You don't know anything about your family. 00:00:17
You don't remember a single thing that you used to like. 00:00:19
How would you feel if you had no recollection of the past? 00:00:22
History is not just about the epic events that had happened in the past. 00:00:28
Your birthday, your first day of school, first time you rode a bike. 00:00:32
It's also a part of history. 00:00:36
Your history. 00:00:38
Everything with a past has a history. 00:00:40
Life on Earth, people, art, countries, and even ice cream. 00:00:43
So what's the difference between a historical event and a tale? 00:00:50
History is the study of past events supported by evidence. 00:00:54
It means that for a story to be considered as a historical event, 00:00:58
we need to know when and where it occurred, 00:01:02
as well as a record proving that it has occurred. 00:01:04
It feels like we don't spend a single minute that is not recorded today. 00:01:07
However, things weren't always like that in the past. 00:01:12
Photos, artifacts, engravings and letters from the past are all records of history. 00:01:15
Do you think this boy took this photo to celebrate the day he received his first bike in 1921? 00:01:20
How old do you think he was in this photo? 00:01:28
Is it possible that he was as old as you today? 00:01:30
What does a historian do? 00:01:35
A good historian tracks down clues about the past events like a detective. 00:01:37
Then he tries to reveal what exactly has happened in the past 00:01:42
by understanding the cause and effect relationship between the information and the records he collected. 00:01:45
History gives us information about who we are and where we come from. 00:01:51
History also inspires us as to what kind of a person we want to be. 00:01:56
Human history might be full of injustices and wars, 00:02:00
but it's also full of great examples about courage and virtue. 00:02:04
History gives us a perspective on what is important in life. 00:02:08
For example, when the world was in ruins after World War II, 00:02:12
the countries established the United Nations with the aim of resolving conflicts peacefully instead of going to war. 00:02:16
Being able to understand historical events might also prevent us from making similar mistakes. 00:02:23
Knowing about the past helps us analyze the events happening today. 00:02:29
It also allows us to make assumptions about future. 00:02:34
For example, many of the precautions taken during the COVID-19 epidemic were based on 00:02:37
the past lessons learned from other epidemics, including the Great Spanish Flu in 1918. 00:02:42
Events in history cannot be studied by establishing the same conditions like 00:02:48
designing an experiment in a lab. So, we need the support of other scientific disciplines 00:02:52
in order to fully understand what has happened in the past. 00:02:57
There are many scientific disciplines that help us understand history. However, 00:03:01
three of these are the most important as they help us differentiate historical events from 00:03:05
tales right away. 00:03:10
We need a scientific discipline to help us understand when the event has occurred. 00:03:12
Chronology is the science of arranging events in their order of occurrence in time. 00:03:18
We need a scientific discipline to help us understand where the event has occurred. 00:03:23
Geography is the study of places and relationship between people and their environments. 00:03:27
We also need a scientific discipline to help us collect and examine evidence. 00:03:33
Archaeology is the study of material remains, stuff people have left behind in history. 00:03:38
With the help of these disciplines, we can understand the conditions under which the 00:03:44
historical events took place and learn what has happened in the past, even if we weren't 00:03:48
there to see it. 00:03:52
History is the study of past events supported by evidence. 00:03:59
History gives us information about who we are, where we come from and what kind of a 00:04:04
person we would like to be in future. 00:04:07
History gives us a perspective on what is important in life. 00:04:11
