UNICEF Chief of the Health Section Peter Salama, talks about UNICEF's role in Africa Malaria Day.
You're watching UNICEF Television.
00:00:00
UNICEF's Chief of the Health Department, Peter Salama,
00:00:03
talks about Africa Malaria Day
00:00:06
and the important methods being used to fight the deadly disease.
00:00:08
Africa Malaria Day is a key day to remember all of the children
00:00:12
that die every year from malaria.
00:00:17
And it's a coordinated set of activities that go on all over the world
00:00:19
to mark solidarity with African children
00:00:23
who die in the numbers of more than 800,000 every year of malaria.
00:00:27
There are four key measures to protect children against malaria.
00:00:32
The first is the use of insecticide-treated bed nets
00:00:35
to prevent the mosquito actually biting children.
00:00:38
And that really is a key control measure for malaria.
00:00:41
Secondarily, and most importantly, the use of effective drugs
00:00:44
once children are showing the signs and symptoms of malaria.
00:00:48
And that includes artemisinin-based combination therapies
00:00:51
which are a new and very effective treatment for malaria.
00:00:55
Thirdly, we do support something called
00:00:58
intermittent presumptive treatment for malaria.
00:01:01
And that's basically giving women twice during the course of their antenatal period
00:01:04
prior to delivery, a course of treatment for malaria,
00:01:09
which actually has the effect of improving their own health
00:01:12
but also improving the health of newborns.
00:01:15
And lastly, UNICEF also supports in certain circumstances,
00:01:18
particularly unstable malaria environments,
00:01:21
the use of indoor residual spraying.
00:01:24
That's insecticide treatment for reducing mosquito populations.
00:01:26
UNICEF will prioritize this program over the next few years
00:01:31
as a key component of our integrated work on child survival.
00:01:35
So that includes health programs, water and sanitation programs,
00:01:41
and nutrition programs, and malaria is a key component of those.
