Hello everyone, we are Daniela, Álvaro and Héctor.
00:00:09
Today we are going to talk about Abraham Lincoln, one of the most famous presidents in the history of the United States.
00:00:13
He was born in a poor family, but he worked very hard and became president.
00:00:20
He helped end slavery and tried to keep the country united during a difficult war.
00:00:24
Let's learn more about his life.
00:00:29
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th in 1809, near Houghtonville in the state of Kentucky.
00:00:31
His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks.
00:00:39
The family lived on a small farm and did not have much money.
00:00:43
Abraham did not go to school often because he needed to help his family work.
00:00:47
Even when he was young, Abraham loved reading.
00:00:53
He read books about history, love, and famous people.
00:00:56
Sometimes he walked long distances to borrow books from other families.
00:01:00
When Abraham was eight years old, his family moved to Indiana.
00:01:04
Life there was difficult.
00:01:09
They built their own home and worked every day on the farm.
00:01:10
Sadly, Abraham's mother died when he was still a child.
00:01:14
Later, his father married Sarah Bash, Johnson.
00:01:18
She was kind and encouraged Abraham to continue studying and reading books.
00:01:21
Abraham became very intelligent because he studied by himself.
00:01:27
He often read at night near the fire because the family had no electricity.
00:01:30
As a teenager, Abraham Lincoln was very tall and strong. He worked in many different jobs.
00:01:35
He could work on farms and help transport goods on boats. One day he traveled to New Orleans.
00:01:42
There, he saw slavery for the first time. He saw enslaved people working in terrible conditions.
00:01:49
This experience changed him deeply. Later, Lincoln moved to Illinois, near Springfield.
00:01:55
Springfield. He worked in a store and became popular because he was honest and friendly.
00:02:02
Many people trusted him, so they called him Honest Albert. Lincoln wanted a better future,
00:02:08
so he studied law alone. He read many books and became a lawyer. Soon, he started working
00:02:14
in politics because he wanted to help people. In 1816, Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President
00:02:21
of the United States. At that time, the country was divided because of slavery. Soon after
00:02:29
he became president, the American Civil War began between the North and the South. Lincoln
00:02:36
believed slavery was wrong. During the war, he signed the Emancipation Proclamation in
00:02:40
1863. This important document helped free enslaved people in the southern states. The
00:02:47
The war was long and difficult, but Lincoln stayed strong and continued fighting for unity
00:02:56
and freedom.
00:03:01
During the last years of the war, Lincoln worked closely with General Ulysses S. Grant.
00:03:02
Together they planned how to end the war and rebuild the country.
00:03:10
Lincoln also spent time with his family.
00:03:16
He was married to Mary Todd, and they had four sons.
00:03:18
loved his children very much. After four difficult years, the civil war finally ended in 1865. Many
00:03:24
people were happy because the country could finally become peace again. However, a tragic
00:03:32
event happened so soon after. On April 14th of 1865, Lincoln went to Ford's Theater with his
00:03:40
wife to watch a play. During the performance, an actor named John Wilkes Booth shot him.
00:03:51
Abraham Lincoln died the next morning. People across the country were shocked and very sad.
00:03:59
Today, Lincoln is remembered as a brave, honest, and intelligent leader. He helped
00:04:05
end slavery and protect the United States during one of the most difficult times.
00:04:12
There are many monuments dedicated to him, including the famous Lincoln Memorial.
00:04:19
His story teaches us that education, hard work and kindness can change the world.
