So, today we are going to talk about reported speech.
00:00:00
When do we use reported speech?
00:00:14
We use reported speech to express what another person has said without using the same exact
00:00:17
words.
00:00:23
So, in formal language, we use that to begin the reported speech clause.
00:00:24
For example, she said that she had a headache.
00:00:29
However, in informal language, we often omit it, so it will say, she said she had a headache.
00:00:33
What about the changes?
00:00:44
We have to change the tense of the main verb.
00:00:45
So, if in direct speech we have a present simple, in the reported speech we will say
00:00:48
a past simple.
00:00:53
We have a present continuous, we will use a past continuous.
00:00:55
We have a present perfect simple, past perfect simple in the reported speech.
00:00:59
We have a past simple or a past perfect simple, we will use a past perfect simple in the reported
00:01:03
speech.
00:01:09
And if we are going to use the going to, we change the verb to be in the present to the
00:01:10
verb to be in the past.
00:01:16
Was, were, going to.
00:01:18
We have some other verbs, that's will, can and must, and we have to change it too to
00:01:22
the reported speech.
00:01:26
If we have a will, we will use a good, if we have the modal verb can, we will change
00:01:27
it to could, and if we have must or have to, we will change it to had to, the past.
00:01:33
We also have to change some words or expressions.
00:01:42
So for example, if in direct speech we use now, we have to write then or at that time
00:01:45
in the reported speech clause.
00:01:52
If we have a sentence using tonight, we will have to change it to that night, and if we
00:01:54
are going to use some words such as yesterday or two years ago, we will change it to day
00:02:02
before or two years earlier.
00:02:08
What about reporting verbs and structures?
00:02:17
With the verbs offer, promise and agree, we will use to plus infinitive.
00:02:20
For example, he offered to drive ours.
00:02:27
But if we have some verbs such as tell, ask, advise, order, warn or remind, we will use
00:02:32
the object and then the to plus infinitive.
00:02:38
For example, she asked me to stay for dinner.
00:02:41
With the verbs tell and promise, we will also use an object and then that and the sentence
00:02:47
or the clause.
00:02:55
For example, he told me that she will call me.
00:02:56
However, with the verbs say, announce, deny or admit, we will use just that and the rest
00:03:01
of the sentence.
00:03:08
For example, he said that he will call me.
00:03:09
With the verbs apologize for, accuse plus the object of, congratulate plus the object
00:03:15
on or suggest and admit, we will use the verb with the ing.
00:03:23
For example, he apologized for breaking it or she accused me of stealing it.
00:03:28
Finally, the reported questions.
00:03:37
The direct and indirect questions have different structures.
00:03:43
In the direct question, we use the verb and then the subject.
00:03:47
Where are you from?
00:03:51
She asked.
00:03:52
But in the reported questions, we have the subject and then the verb.
00:03:53
She asked me where I was from.
00:03:58
With the wh-questions, we repeat the question word in the reported questions.
00:04:02
The questions were such as what, when, why, what.
00:04:09
For example, she asked me what the time was.
00:04:14
If we have a yes or no question, we use if or whether in the reported question instead.
00:04:19
For example, he asked me if or he asked me whether I was happy.
00:04:26
That's all I have to teach you about reported speech.
