the video you're about to watch 00:00:00
is the third and last part of the series dedicated to the works of the Spanish 00:00:31
painter Diego Velázquez. Most of his paintings are found in el Museo del Prado 00:00:37
in Madrid, but there are other ones all around the world. Today we're going to 00:00:43
study four paintings that are in museums outside Spain. 00:00:49
Are these men important people? As we have already said, Velázquez liked to paint 00:00:54
common people from the streets and other characters that were close to him, like 00:01:01
relatives or friends. However, he also painted important people like kings and 00:01:07
queens, princes and princesses, ministers, painters, writers and popes. This is the 00:01:14
portrait of the Spanish writer Luis de Góngora and it is found in Boston the 00:01:25
USA. He is one of the best writers of the 17th century and to me he is really 00:01:30
meaningful because he was born in my home city Cordoba, Spain. In this 00:01:38
portrait the painter was able to express Góngora's sobriety, serenity, seriousness 00:01:44
and austerity in a wonderful way. Here Velázquez is depicting a picture of the 00:01:52
Pope Innocent X. The Pope is the head and the most important figure of the 00:01:59
Catholic Church and since its creation there have been 264 popes, the current 00:02:06
one being Pope Francis. This is another masterpiece as the painter was able to 00:02:13
show the Pope's intelligence and wit. In fact, many artists consider that this is the best 00:02:22
portrait ever painted. A strong opinion. What do you think? Do you agree with them? A unique 00:02:29
painting. Venus at her mirror is found in the National Gallery in London and it is unique 00:02:37
because it depicts a nude woman. At that time, nude portraits were forbidden by Popes and the 00:02:44
Catholic Church, but this painting was able to survive. It shows Venus, the Roman goddess of 00:02:51
beauty and femininity, who is looking at herself in a mirror. Notice that the symbol femininity is 00:03:01
this one, and do you think what it stands for? Exactly, this stands for a mirror. It makes sense, 00:03:09
does it? The child who is holding the mirror is the Roman god of love, Cupid. Cupid was the son 00:03:17
of Venus and Mars, and he is normally depicted with wings. He is the one that throws arrows to 00:03:27
people, so be really careful, because if he throws you an arrow, you will immediately fall in love. 00:03:34
Finally, Venus's reflection at the mirror is an invented one 00:03:41
as it is physically impossible to show it that way 00:03:47
but it is the painter's creation and he expressed it the way he wanted 00:03:51
There is no confusion about the title 00:03:57
Old Woman Frying Eggs is found in Edinburgh, Scotland 00:04:00
This is a special painting because it is a mixture of a portrait and still life. 00:04:07
In still lifes the painter shows scenes of dead animals, fruits, vegetables or flowers but also 00:04:15
he shows objects like jugs or bottles. As a portrait it depicts a boy looking at the camera 00:04:24
and an old lady looking at somewhere else. We have to say that Velázquez was really interested 00:04:35
in catching the momentum and this can be seen in this moment where the egg white which looks 00:04:44
transparent turns white when it is cooked. And so far this is it. I hope you have enjoyed the videos 00:04:50
And what do you think? Now is your turn. What is your favorite painting? Which other artist would 00:05:01
you like to learn about? Thank you very much for watching and I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye! 00:05:07
