Welcome to our late night show. I'm Jimmy Fallon and tonight we have a very unique program because we are going to talk with the astronomer who has been put under arrest at home after being sentenced to life in prison. He's the one and only Galileo Galilei. Thank you very much Mr. Galileo for opening your home to us.
00:00:01
You're welcome, my friend. I usually spend time at home, lonely, with no visits.
00:00:32
You must be really powerful to have got the permit to visit me.
00:00:40
As you know, I was sentenced to life in prison for trying to share my findings.
00:00:44
So I heard. That's why we are here tonight, to let our audience know the whole truth about you and your theories.
00:00:50
Can you please tell us why we're why you are in this situation? It's really simple son. I admit I'm guilty of
00:01:00
Thinking that the earth is the center of the universe
00:01:09
Yes, however, the charts is still thinking that the earth is the center of the universe
00:01:14
The geocentric model of the universe which you defend is thought to be some kind of heresy, right?
00:01:19
Why do you still insist on the same idea?
00:01:26
I'm loyal to my ideas if I feel that's the right thing to do. My duty is to teach what I have found out in my research.
00:01:29
Can you tell our audience how everything started for you?
00:01:39
I started studying medicine at college. My father wanted me to be a physician because they earned much more money than mathematicians.
00:01:42
But then I started to feel interested in physics and maths.
00:01:53
I observed how the chandeliers always took the same amount of time to go from side to side,
00:01:58
no matter the distance or the breeze.
00:02:05
Then I understood the physics of the world were amazing.
00:02:09
Well, that can happen, not against the law.
00:02:17
so what did you do that got you into trouble? I started experimenting and then
00:02:19
the other students at the university thought I was crazy
00:02:26
I graduated and became a professor at college. That's interesting and I also heard that you
00:02:30
invented strange tools can you show us any? Here I have this thing called
00:02:39
thermometer which can't test temperature do you want me to take temperature no
00:02:44
thanks I also have my dearest invention here with me telescope how is that
00:02:50
instrument special the telescope has given me everything and has taken
00:02:59
everything from me I don't think I understand it has opened a new reality
00:03:06
to me and I hoped the rest of the world someday but because of it I was
00:03:11
sentenced for life in prison well actually that's not fair the one to
00:03:17
blame is the charr that old-fashioned institution which stops progress we
00:03:24
don't much respect what the charr says though they are the ones who have the
00:03:31
knowledge stop speaking nonsense son i was sent to prison because the church forbid me to write
00:03:37
or teach about my work i insisted on teaching my students the truth and not that illogical
00:03:45
stupidity of the earth being the center of the universe how can you be so sure son with this
00:03:51
little toy i was able to see the night sky as never before i can claim our moon as mountains
00:03:59
and craters. What's more, I have also seen Jupiter and its craters.
00:04:07
Really? I'm not sure why I should believe you and I shouldn't believe what the chart says.
00:04:14
Sam, you're pissing me off. I'm not asking an act of faith from you. I'm not a religious man.
00:04:21
I'm a scientist, for God's sake. And all I do is experiment, experiment, experiment.
00:04:27
Test, test, and test again. That is the scientific method.
00:04:33
How does that work? I think you are going too far from my understanding.
00:04:37
It's simple. Not everything is based on logic. We need science.
00:04:42
For example, when I was young, I went up to the Tower of Pisa,
00:04:46
and from the very top, I let two very different objects in size and weight fall.
00:04:51
Well, surprisingly and against all logic, they both landed on Earth at the same time.
00:04:58
Okay, okay, it doesn't sound logic to me, but I think you must be right.
00:05:05
Can you explain your theory of the universe to our viewers?
00:05:10
That's all I have been trying to do all my life.
00:05:14
Our planet Earth revolves around the Sun,
00:05:18
because it's the Sun that is at the center of the universe,
00:05:22
and not the earth. And the moons revolve around the planets, all the planets, not
00:05:26
sure how many they are, though must all be the big star, the sun. Well I'm starting
00:05:33
to think you've been seen through a lot in your life because of these beliefs
00:05:39
and that. For us, they are more than simple opinions. I really hope someday
00:05:43
you will be recognized for your work and who knows perhaps someone will
00:05:49
call you the father of physics. I don't think so. Now I'm just an old blind man
00:05:55
locked in my house. I think you should leave before it's too late for you two and the
00:06:03
Inquisition comes to get you. Well, well, okay. I shall be going then. Thank you for
00:06:09
all, Mr. Galileo.
