I think that the hospitality is a lot different in Spain than it is in the United States and I was so overwhelmed with how nice everyone was and what they've given me.
00:00:11
I think that the high school and the college here, like, we can't use the phone and eat in class and they can't do it, so it's so strange for me.
00:00:23
Well, I think that life in the USA differs in very different ways from life in Spain.
00:00:31
For instance, you go by car to almost everywhere.
00:00:38
Yeah, here you walk a lot. I don't walk at all at home.
00:00:43
We walk a lot here than we do at home because we can't get anywhere by walking.
00:00:48
And also, your life is very busy. You have a lot of activities and homework to do.
00:00:58
Yeah, it was busy here just because we wanted to do a bunch of stuff.
00:01:04
When you text me, you just say you do study and stuff.
00:01:09
Yeah, we're doing homework almost all the day.
00:01:12
Life in Spain is different because everything's at different times.
00:01:17
You guys will eat dinner at like 9, 30, 10 and we'll have dinner at like 5 because it's so much different.
00:01:22
Everything is different in the USA. They do other kinds of sports. They have different timetables. It's so much different.
00:01:27
In America, we spend more time with their families than we do with the natives.
00:01:37
Life is the same. Here we don't spend a lot of time.
00:01:43
We eat our meals. Both breakfast, lunch and dinner are different.
00:01:47
One, because we eat lunch at school in America, whereas here they come home and eat it together.
00:01:50
and a lot of the meals are eaten like all together as a family.
00:01:55
Where at my house with our different schedules we eat more apart instead of more together.
00:01:59
So that was really different.
00:02:04
Back home in the United States it's definitely a lot more structured
00:02:07
and we all set a plan of what we're going to do.
00:02:12
And also we don't walk anywhere really.
00:02:16
So here it's definitely the complete opposite of that.
00:02:19
everywhere, you go with the flow. I think the time, the time is so different. Yes. Like the schedule.
00:02:22
So 6 p.m. dinner in the United States, like a 10 or 11 p.m. lunch, like 11 or 12
00:02:34
in the United States, here, three, four, two, three.
00:02:44
Living in Alcorcon, they don't have sports at the school,
00:02:52
so like they have shorter days,
00:02:56
like we get to leave school earlier, I mean later, sorry.
00:02:58
And also they eat dinner and like meals
00:03:01
at later times than we do in Pembroke.
00:03:05
My opinion, it was harder for Joey,
00:03:12
Because he doesn't know anything and also because he doesn't know as much Spanish as I do English
00:03:14
So it's harder for him to understand what we are saying
00:03:26
Yeah, I think it was harder for me because he likes to eat everything in the US and he's really good at English
00:03:31
And I'm really bad at Spanish, so it was harder for me
00:03:36
I think it was harder for Sara because when I was in the USA, I could speak more English
00:03:39
and I could communicate with your family and as you speak a little bit Spanish, it's harder
00:03:48
for you to communicate with my family and those.
00:03:56
And I also feel that it was harder for me coming here than when Rosalia came to my house
00:04:01
because she has traveled to the United States before and has tried a lot of American food
00:04:06
and I feel like they have a lot of the same foods here whereas for me when I came here
00:04:12
every day I had new foods that I'd never tried before and so that was a lot harder for me not
00:04:17
being able to communicate with their parents and then explain to me what they were making
00:04:22
and never trying them before. I think that it was more or less the same because we have to adapt to
00:04:27
a different culture and there are some differences but i think it was hard well it was like the same
00:04:34
level yeah i agree because we both had to like adjust to each other's lives and neither of us
00:04:43
really knew what to do when we got to each country because you had to adjust to my really busy
00:04:51
schedule and i have to adjust it to the language barrier and all that stuff
00:04:57
i'm also the food in agri-times table center yes
00:05:02
i think that he found it harder because his language like his spanish is not the
00:05:07
same level as i am in english but he did really well and he
00:05:11
handled it really well with all the people here and my family too
00:05:15
so he did really well i agree with what alex said
00:05:18
about the language barrier i think it was harder
00:05:22
for me here because I got sick the first two days and was throwing up and I miss my family
00:05:26
a lot that I hadn't had before.
00:05:34
I think it was harder for Ella too because I didn't miss my family as much as she did.
00:05:39
I would say that the best part of this whole exchange was meeting Pi after three years
00:05:52
first time in Pembroke because we've been friends since freshman year and we've been talking since
00:05:57
then like she knows everything about me and me and her for the first time it was like really special
00:06:03
yeah it was like super exciting how having time with with her because we were talking each to
00:06:09
each other like for a long time and then meeting in person it was really good um i just liked that
00:06:18
they could drive with the same age as I have and they could do much more things than we could
00:06:25
because of driving. And I liked the fact that since they lived in a city setting everything
00:06:31
was closer that they were able to walk everywhere and take public transportation because we don't
00:06:36
really have that option at home. The best part about the exchange for me has been spending time
00:06:40
with Rosalia's family and having meals with them because it's just really interesting for me seeing
00:06:48
the types of foods that they eat every day and talking or trying to talk with
00:06:53
her parents and I like it when her dad tries to speak English with me because
00:06:57
then I have to try and speak Spanish with him and so at meals we kind of make a
00:07:02
deal that he would try to speak in English with me if I would try and speak
00:07:08
in Spanish with him. I love going with you to the high school because there are like a lot of
00:07:11
difference between your high school and my high school so i love being there and i also
00:07:22
like when i was with your family because i feel really comfortable with them and i really like
00:07:29
them i think just walking around like meeting his friends and like seeing what he does on a
00:07:35
daily basis it's the best part yeah for me it's the same just getting to meet everyone from the
00:07:39
the US and getting to be going was the best part the best part I think it was
00:07:45
meeting her and staying 24 hours with her I'm just seeing a different culture
00:07:51
going out every night and just going home doing things a lot of people had
00:07:57
never known before I think you know it's always new people from other culture they
00:08:01
do something different for you yeah and like meeting all the new people that
00:08:10
like you don't know before like not even Justin's been but like also the people
00:08:19
in Pembroke the biggest impression was Adrian's family I loved just like
00:08:24
talking with them and their culture just mixing with mine
00:08:30
I kind of liked that everything was like a spread because dad was like really calm
00:08:35
everything was really calm like here everything's so it's always so busy and
00:08:42
noisy. I'd say that Spanish families and American families have a common is that
00:08:47
they're both very hospitable they were very welcoming and we felt at home yeah
00:08:57
that's the same thing I feel like home Stacy was like a mom for me when I was
00:09:02
We actually think that the families are very similar, yeah.
00:09:06
You can still have fun with your friends in both places, I think. Just different activities,
00:09:13
but you're always with people like you are in Pembroke and you.
00:09:19
In weekends, we take the breakfast together. Yeah, breakfast is big on the weekends.
00:09:24
We think that, personally, the welcoming of the people and also the love both families have from the extreme foreigners and everything.
00:09:32
Both our families, they always joke around.
00:09:44
Both of them.
00:09:46
Yeah, also the jokes.
00:09:47
Yeah.
00:09:48
Our families have many things in common.
00:09:49
Probably the family life, like all talking to each other and eating together. I know my family and Lucia's family both does that.
00:09:52
I thought the food was going to be spicy, and then what I didn't expect, there were so many dogs, it was so cute, there were so many of them just like walking on the street, it was so cute.
00:10:05
So in my case, I really thought people walk there, but nobody walks, everybody uses their car, here people walk alone.
00:10:21
there's a lot you need a lot more and a lot more quantities and I I don't know
00:10:29
but I I like the American food too when coming to Spain I expected to try new
00:10:42
foods and like just experiencing things because I thought that everything would
00:10:52
be very different and also I thought that the school like going to school with them would be
00:10:57
very different than high school at Pembroke and it was and I didn't expect all of the like public
00:11:03
transport and walking that we did because in Pembroke we don't take buses or trains or walk
00:11:11
anywhere so it was very different i expected to make new friends and to go everywhere by car
00:11:19
because we here we go to school and go shopping by bus or walking and i didn't expect
00:11:28
to open up with Hannah and her family because it's a other language.
00:11:42
This is something that like not a lot of people get to do and now it makes me
00:11:51
realize that I definitely want to travel a lot more. Tortilla de patata, macaroni
00:11:56
tea. Hamon. S'mores. My favorite meal was croquetas. They were really good. And mine
00:12:09
was mac and cheese, which is really good. Marzipan. I don't like fish. My favorite meal is paella.
00:12:21
My favorite meal was mac and cheese.
00:12:33
The break time. I like it like an hour of break, get to leave. Half an hour, half an hour.
00:12:37
A break, get to leave, go wherever you want. For me, the musketeer, of course. I like that.
00:12:48
Learning a second language when you're younger is definitely something I'd be interested in.
00:12:57
that they have more free time around.
00:13:02
The canteen is fantastic.
00:13:09
A lot more food than what we can buy at our school and drinks.
00:13:13
I think the dimension because our high school is very small
00:13:18
And the high school of Pembroke is enormous.
00:13:28
One thing I would bring to my school would be the breaks that their school has.
00:13:39
What I bring to my school is that they can eat in class.
00:13:46
We plan on keeping in touch.
00:13:54
Maybe you were planning on him coming to the US over the summer and going up to Maine.
00:13:56
I'm willing to go to the USA because I need to go again.
00:14:00
I need to meet all his family again and I'm willing to go to Maine with him.
00:14:04
Yeah, I know so.
00:14:08
I'd like to go over the summer to Boston, but I don't know, I don't know.
