Hello everyone, this video is to revise the present simple and the present continuous.
00:00:00
You can watch it as many times as you want as a revision of the explanations given in class
00:00:06
and then you will have to complete some exercises regarding these two tenses.
00:00:11
We use tenses or verbs to refer to actions or situations in the present, in the past and in the future.
00:00:17
In this lesson, we are going to revise two tenses that are used to refer to actions in the present.
00:00:23
The present simple and the present continuous.
00:00:31
Now let's get started.
00:00:34
I'm going to show you when to use the present simple and when to use the present continuous.
00:00:38
Let's have a look at these sentences.
00:00:43
I never cook dinner. He is cooking dinner.
00:00:46
The first sentence is in the present simple tense.
00:00:49
The second sentence is in the present continuous tense.
00:00:52
First, we're going to have a look at how to form a present simple and how to form a present continuous.
00:00:57
For the present simple, we use the infinitive form of the verb.
00:01:04
For the present continuous, we need the auxiliary verb to be plus the infinitive form of the verb, followed by ing.
00:01:09
So this would be a gerund, the verb ending in ing.
00:01:17
An example for the present simple is, in affirmative, we walk to school every day.
00:01:23
With the present simple, we need to pay extra attention to the third person singular, he, she and it,
00:01:34
because in conjugating that verb, we add an S.
00:01:41
For example, he plays the guitar, she likes dancing.
00:01:47
Let's have a look at two more examples in the negative form
00:01:53
and two more examples in the interrogative form.
00:01:57
In the negative form, we use the auxiliary don't or doesn't
00:02:01
for the third person singular plus the infinitive.
00:02:05
I don't walk to school, she doesn't like dancing
00:02:08
in the interverbative form we use
00:02:12
the auxiliary do or does for the third person singular
00:02:16
plus the subject followed by the infinitive
00:02:20
do they walk to school, does she like dancing
00:02:24
now regarding the present continuous
00:02:27
we form it with the auxiliary verb of the to be
00:02:32
as I said before, am, is or are
00:02:36
followed by the verb ending in ing here you have an example in the affirmative
00:02:39
form they are walking home now in the present continuous negative we use the
00:02:47
negative form of the verb to be I'm not isn't aren't followed by the verb ending
00:02:54
in ing you aren't listening to me she isn't dancing right now in the
00:02:59
interrogative form of the present continuous we use the auxiliary am is or
00:03:07
are followed by the subject plus the verb ending in ing are you listening to
00:03:13
me are they coming to the party now when do we use each of these tenses we use a
00:03:20
present simple for habits or routines when something happens always regularly
00:03:31
sometimes, never, etc. We use a present continuous for a temporary activity. An
00:03:37
example of the present simple here is I always do my homework in my bedroom. An
00:03:45
example of the present continuous here is today I'm doing my homework in the
00:03:52
kitchen. The present simple is also used when talking about facts and the present
00:03:59
continuous is also used when something is happening right now. An example of the
00:04:09
present simple here is water boils at 100 degrees Celsius and an example of
00:04:15
the present continuous here could be the water is boiling. Finally we use the
00:04:21
present simple for timetables and schedules for example the train arrives
00:04:31
at 930 and we use the present continuous to refer to a plan for the near future
00:04:37
for example I'm taking the train tomorrow we know when it's going to
00:04:44
happen now it's time for some practice you're going to do three exercises so
00:04:50
stop the video and take notes of the answers in your notebook in exercise one
00:05:05
you have to choose the correct option as in the example we always celebrate or we
00:05:10
always are celebrating Christmas at my grandparents house the right option is
00:05:16
we always celebrate Christmas at my grandparents house so do the same for
00:05:21
number one number two number three number four number five in exercise two
00:05:30
you have to put the verb in brackets in the correct tense either the present
00:05:46
simple or the present continuous as in the example I really love Christmas we
00:05:50
don't say I am really loving Christmas and finally in exercise 3 you have to
00:05:57
