Good morning. So in this hopefully shorter video, I will summarise everything that you have to do when it comes to planning your article.
00:00:00
Remember that you're writing one article with a partner. So there are two authors, but it must read as if it's one person who's writing the article.
00:00:10
My suggestion is that one of you should work on the introduction and paragraph two and the other student should work on paragraph three and the conclusion.
00:00:22
You will be assessed on the work that you do. And I'll be asking you which paragraphs you were responsible for.
00:00:33
So let's begin. Planning your persuasive text. First of all, at the top of your notebook, both of you, each in your own notebooks, should write the title of the article that you've been given.
00:00:43
And now I'm going to give you a checklist of things you should do. Number one, underline the key words in your title, in your topic.
00:00:55
Make sure that you know what those words mean. This is very important, but you'd be surprised how many people don't know some of the important words and then write the wrong article.
00:01:06
So make sure that you're very clear about the words in the title and you know exactly what your topic is going to be on.
00:01:17
Then with your partner, decide number two, the position that you will have if you're for, if you're against.
00:01:25
And you both have to have the same position, because remember, we're writing a persuasive text and not a discursive text where you put two points of view.
00:01:33
So you both must have the same position. Either you both agree or you both disagree.
00:01:42
Number three, brainstorm everything you know about the topic together. This is important because you're activating the knowledge that you have about this topic.
00:01:49
So this part should take you about 10 to 15 minutes. The best ideas come towards the end, not the beginning.
00:01:59
So please do take time together to brainstorm what you know about the topic.
00:02:07
Number four, brainstorm facts that you may know about this topic and write the best ones or put an asterisk next to the best ones.
00:02:13
Once you've done that, you have to research more facts. There's a short video on how to research the factual information.
00:02:23
And then you have to decide which fact each partner is going to choose.
00:02:33
Luckily, in one essay, you only have to present one each, one fact in paragraph two and one fact in paragraph three.
00:02:39
Make sure that you also research the possible evidence for each fact and that it's the best evidence.
00:02:47
Now, here you also have to coordinate so that you don't write the same type of supporting data.
00:02:55
You may remember in a previous video, I said that if in paragraph two you decide to use an expert, then paragraph three, you should not use the same type of evidence.
00:03:02
You should either opt for a statistic or a reliable source.
00:03:14
OK, so once you have researched and decided the facts and the evidence, the supporting data, you can then focus on the next part.
00:03:20
So one of you will be working on the introduction. And remember that there are three parts to the introduction.
00:03:32
Begin with either a future implication or a question to the reader. State the position that you hold and explain the two areas that you will focus on.
00:03:39
Your partner will be working on the conclusion or you may be working on the conclusion, your partner on the introduction, in which case you have to explain the position.
00:03:50
Remember, you have to write this as if you're one person, one author, and you have to explain why you hold that opinion.
00:04:00
Try to use the magic three and refer to your personal life to justify why you have this opinion.
00:04:10
Remember that the conclusion is the only moment where you express an opinion.
00:04:17
Before that, the other three paragraphs have to basically present facts to persuade the reader.
00:04:22
When you have all of the information in your plan, you're near to the end, but you have to do two very important things.
00:04:29
You both have to decide which linkers are going to be used in the model persuasive text.
00:04:36
I use the following linkers to begin with, for example, in one paragraph, moreover, as proof and in conclusion.
00:04:43
You don't have to use these linkers. You can look for others which are synonyms.
00:04:53
But if you're not sure, then feel free to use these.
00:04:58
And the final thing I'd like you to do in your plan is to include grammar structures like will and going to for predictions, because we studied this and I'd like to see it in context.
00:05:02
And if possible, some of the vocabulary on the environment that we've also studied in this term.
00:05:15
So the next page that I want to show you is a kind of a map, a planning map that might help you.
00:05:22
So as you can see in this planner, one of you can write in paragraph to the topic and then the fact and the evidence.
00:05:31
Your partner can write paragraph three, the topic that you will focus on, on paragraph three, the fact and the evidence.
00:05:43
And remember to include the three parts of an introduction, the two parts of a conclusion.
00:05:51
Now, you may ask, do I have to write my partner's plan in my notebook?
00:05:58
I would like you to so that you have a global idea of what the whole article would look like.
00:06:04
And finally, I'd like to show you we've already seen this guide in another video.
00:06:11
But again, it summarises that your intro, your article must have a title.
00:06:18
You must have three parts to your introduction, future implications, question your position and introduce the two topics you're going to work on.
00:06:24
Paragraph two, please use linkers.
00:06:36
So, for example, to begin with, to introduce topic one, the fact, for example, to introduce the evidence.
00:06:40
And then in paragraph three, you can use moreover and introduce topic two, then your fact and as proof and evidence.
00:06:49
And your conclusion must be the only moment where you express the opinion.
00:06:58
And hopefully you'll use the magic three, three moments in your life that justify why you hold that opinion.
00:07:04
Thank you.
