Hi everyone, happy Book Day. If you don't know me, my name is Allie. I am an assistant for the 00:00:00
fifth grade and also one of Pedro's third grade classes. I'm excited to read a story to you today 00:00:08
and I wanted to say I hope you all are staying safe and healthy at home. I love Book Day because 00:00:16
it celebrates one of my favorite hobbies which is reading um but i want to remind you all today's 00:00:26
not the only day of the year you should wait it's a great way to practice learning a new language 00:00:33
thinking outside of the box and um it's an especially it's especially a good activity to do 00:00:38
right now so my two stories are from a book called good night stories for rebel girls 00:00:47
A Hundred Tales of Extraordinary Women. I chose this book because it was International Women's 00:00:54
History Month last month, and I think that's something we should celebrate all the time. 00:01:02
I really recommend this book. It's for all ages, has a lot of inspiring stories. There are now two 00:01:08
of them actually. So the first is about a woman named Simone Biles. Once there was a girl who 00:01:15
could fly. Her name was Simone Biles. Simone was a gymnast, the greatest in American history. 00:01:26
When Simone took to the mat, people couldn't take their eyes off her. She was so fast, so strong, 00:01:36
so flexible, so agile. She flew through the air with such grace and speed, 00:01:43
twisting and turning, landing perfectly each time. Simone started gymnastics when she was just six 00:01:50
years old. By the time she was 18, she had already won so many medals that when she traveled to Rio 00:01:57
for the Olympics, everyone expected her to win not one, but five medals. One day, a journalist 00:02:04
asked her, how do you deal with that kind of pressure? I try not to think about it. Right now, 00:02:12
my goal is to be more consistent on the uneven bars. What about the goal of winning a gold medal? 00:02:18
A medal can't be a goal, Simone replied, smiling. It's like my mom always says, if doing your best 00:02:26
means you come out top, on top, that's awesome. If it means that you finish fourth, that's awesome 00:02:34
two. Simone's mom adopted her when Simone was three. She taught Simone that staying humble 00:02:40
and doing your best is the only way to live a meaningful life and to inspire everyone around 00:02:47
you. At the Olympics in Rio, Simone won five medals, four of them gold. Simone was born on 00:02:53
March 14th, 1997. So she's 23 years old. You're younger than me. This is an illustration of her 00:03:01
on the right. It says, I was built this way for a reason, so I'm going to use it. What I like about 00:03:10
Simone's story is her mom always encouraged her to try her hardest and her best. That's what my mom 00:03:16
did too, and I think that's all you can ask for. And she's been so successful and so inspiring to 00:03:22
so many young boys and girls. My second story is about Marie Curie, the scientist. She was born 00:03:29
on November 7th, 1967. Once in Poland, there was a secret school. People called it the floating 00:03:40
university. Government at that time was very strict about what people could and couldn't study. 00:03:49
Girls were not allowed to go to college at all. Marie and her sister were students at the secret 00:03:56
school. They were tired of hiding. One day, they heard that in Paris, there was a university. 00:04:02
called the Sorbonne, which accepted girls, so they decided to move to France. Marie was fascinated by 00:04:10
metals and magnets. She found out that some minerals were radioactive. They gave off powerful 00:04:17
rays and glowed in the dark. To analyze these minerals' properties, Marie would set them on fire, 00:04:25
melt them, filter them, and stay up all night to watch them glow. Don't try that at home. 00:04:32
Radiation is used to treat many diseases, but it is also very dangerous. 00:04:40
Just imagine that, after all these years, Marie's notebooks and instruments are still radioactive. 00:04:45
If you want to look at them, you have to wear protective clothing and gloves. 00:04:51
Marie's husband, Pierre, was so intrigued by her research that he decided to drop his work on crystals to join her. 00:04:57
Together, they discovered two new radioactive elements. 00:05:04
Polonium and Radium. Marie Curie won two Nobel prizes for her work, and she could have made a 00:05:10
lot of money from her discoveries. She chose instead to make her research available to anyone 00:05:17
for free. The quote on the right says, nothing in life is to be feared, it only is to be understood. 00:05:24
The last thing that I want to show you is the website that the authors of this book 00:05:31
made it has a lot of free activities and resources so um first of all i suggest you all 00:05:35
listen to this podcast um which is an online voice recording about greta thunberg the activist 00:05:46
who is still a girl she's still a child and she is fighting for a future and saving our planet 00:05:54
So especially since yesterday was birthday, I think this is a really important thing to listen to. 00:06:02
So if you click podcast on rebelgirls.com, you can access all of these audio files for free and listen to other stories. 00:06:08
and if you go to free activities 00:06:21
there are journaling, business plans, planting a garden, writing a program 00:06:26
and because the authors know that a lot of kids are learning at home right now 00:06:35
they're making them all free and if your parent gives you permission 00:06:40
they let you use their email you can get them sent to you 00:06:44
um so I hope you all enjoyed this um once again I hope you're staying safe and um I really miss 00:06:48
being with you all and seeing you all at school um I hope you enjoy your reading um during the day 00:06:59
and um yeah lots of love bye 00:07:08
