So, the last two modal verbs that we're going to look at are can and could. 00:00:01
Now, can, we all know, it's talk about ability. 00:00:06
I can speak English. I can ride a bike. I can swim. 00:00:11
And we also use it for requests, the normal things we ask in the classroom. 00:00:16
Can I borrow your rubber? Can I go to the bathroom? Can I get a drink of water? 00:00:21
Now, could is the same verb as can. 00:00:27
but it's in the past. So, we use it to talk about ability in the past. When I was five 00:00:31
years old, I could ride a bike. When I was ten, I could ride a horse. And we also use 00:00:38
could to talk about permission, but in a slightly more polite or formal way. So, if you're talking 00:00:48
to maybe the head teacher at your school, or if you're working, if you're talking to 00:00:57
your boss, you might say could rather than can. Could I ask for your help? Or could I 00:01:02
borrow your pencil? Could just sounds a little bit more formal when we use it to make requests 00:01:11
than can does. Okay, in the next video, we will practice a little bit more. 00:01:18
