Catholic Monarchs The Union of Two Dynasties
00:00:24
At the end of the 15th century, the two most powerful kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula
00:00:35
were Castilla and Aragon. Isabel, Princess of Castilla, and Fernando, heir to the throne
00:00:42
of Aragon, celebrated their marriage on 19 October 1469. This unified the two kingdoms
00:00:50
and was the foundation of the Spanish state as we know it today.
00:01:01
Although the two dynasties formed an alliance, both Castilla and Aragon maintained their
00:01:09
own laws, parliaments, and currencies.

An Authoritarian Monarchy
00:01:21
The Catholic Monarchs were a powerful authoritarian monarchy. They formed a strong and modern
00:01:25
army and an efficient government. This helped them to control their kingdoms. They were
00:01:33
passionate defenders of Christian faith in Spain. They took control of the Muslim kingdom
00:01:42
of Granada in 1492, completing the Reconquista. That same year, they expelled the Jews, ending
00:01:49
years of cultural coexistence in Spain.

Territorial Expansion
00:02:11
The Catholic Monarchs expanded their kingdom. They established new European territories.
00:02:14
Their children married the heirs of powerful European monarchies, consolidating their power
00:02:24
on the continent.
00:02:30
They financed the expedition of Christopher Columbus, who discovered a new continent,
00:02:36
America.
