Hi there, it's still Elizabeth, and we are still working on English 5, Unit 5, Lesson 6. 00:00:00
So, in my last video, I read you the passage on the first part of page 51 in your English book, 00:00:08
and now I want to move on, and I want to make this a little lesson about the rest of Lesson 6. 00:00:16
So if you look about halfway down the page, still on page 51, you'll see a little box diagram. 00:00:22
And inside it will say modal verbs of obligation. 00:00:32
So I know that might sound scary or intimidating, or you may have not even learned about it ever before. 00:00:36
So I just want to make it really easy for you. 00:00:44
First, I'm going to read what's in the book. 00:00:47
the examples that the book has given you. 00:00:50
The lead climber has to wear a harness. 00:00:54
So this is a have to and must statement, 00:00:58
which means it is necessary. 00:01:02
Another example would be the other climber 00:01:07
must hold the rope. 00:01:11
So what this is saying is if it has have to or must, 00:01:14
it is necessary. In the box next to it, it says mustn't, which means it is not permitted. 00:01:18
Not permitted is another way of saying it is not allowed. They mustn't climb without a helmet, 00:01:28
which means that the children are not allowed to climb without a helmet. 00:01:36
If you look to the third column, it says don't have to, which means it's not necessary. 00:01:41
Climbers don't have to be adults, so it's not necessary for the climbers to be an adult. 00:01:53
All right, and now I want to tell you about some examples I thought of on my own, 00:02:01
and I wanna show you how easy it is 00:02:05
for you to make up your own examples 00:02:07
so you can practice this at home. 00:02:09
So, necessary. 00:02:12
Necessary, just to remind you, 00:02:14
means you're using must or have to. 00:02:17
So for example, my example I thought of 00:02:22
was plants must have air to live. 00:02:25
That means that the plants need the air to live. 00:02:29
If it doesn't rain, you will have to water your plants. 00:02:32
Okay? 00:02:40
All right, not permitted. 00:02:41
So this means that you're using the word mustn't. 00:02:43
You mustn't scream in the classroom. 00:02:46
So screaming in the classroom, not permitted. 00:02:48
All right, moving on to not necessary. 00:02:53
You don't have to give me a birthday present. 00:02:56
That means it's not necessary 00:02:59
for you to give me a birthday present. 00:03:01
But you can also make this into a necessary statement. 00:03:04
Ta-da! 00:03:11
So here we have, you have to give me a birthday present. 00:03:12
So would that mean is this sentence necessary 00:03:17
or not necessary? 00:03:21
If you're saying you have to. 00:03:23
So that means that this is a necessary statement. 00:03:26
All right, if you wanna practice this at home, 00:03:32
you can write your own examples 00:03:36
using things in your own house. 00:03:38
For example, what kind of chores do you need to do? 00:03:40
I have to wash the dishes. 00:03:44
Or I don't have to wash the dishes. 00:03:46
Or what is not permitted in your house? 00:03:51
For example, I mustn't run in the house. 00:03:54
or I mustn't throw the ball at my brother. 00:03:58
All right, I hope that made it easy. 00:04:02
Keep practicing this and I will see you in my next video. 00:04:04
Thank you, bye-bye. 00:04:08
