The Roman Colosseum, a spectacular show! 00:00:00
Welcome young adventurers to Unseen Adventures. I am your host, Katie. 00:00:08
Hello, I am your friend, Mary. 00:00:13
And I am your co-host, Lily. 00:00:16
Today we are diving deep into the Athean world of Rome to discover the magnificent Roman Colosseum. 00:00:18
Close your eyes and imagine, friends. 00:00:26
A long, long time ago in ancient Rome, there was this emperor named Vespasian. 00:00:28
He wanted to make the people happy, so he came up with an incredible idea, building a massive amphitheater. 00:00:34
That's right, Mary. It was like a hack stadium for entertaining the crowd. 00:00:42
And guess what? Vespasian chose a special spot in the center of Rome for the Colosseum, 00:00:48
close to an important place. 00:00:54
He wanted to give back to the people 00:00:56
and show that he cared about their fun. 00:01:00
The Colosseum got its name from a big statue 00:01:03
in Nervi called the Colossus of Nero, 00:01:06
left by a previous emperor. 00:01:10
Construction started in 74 CE 00:01:13
and took a few years to finish. 00:01:16
Vespasian passed it away, 00:01:19
But his soon-to-be sisters completed the Colosseum in 80 CE. 00:01:21
Can you imagine adventures? 00:01:27
The Colosseum was a big oval shape with walls over 150 feet tall. 00:01:30
And get this, the floor had sand to soak up blood from dictators' fights and give them good footing. 00:01:37
Eww, but cool! 00:01:45
The Colosseum had special features like a royal box for the emperor, numbered seats like in today's stadium, and a hot sun shade for hot days. Underneath there were tunnels and cages called the hypogeum, where gladiators and animals waited to surprise everyone. 00:01:47
Lots of events happened at the Colosseum Adventurers. In the mornings, there were funny stalls and animal performances. Trained hunters even killed animals from faraway places. And in the afternoon, it was all about gladiator fights, epic battles between different fighters. 00:02:09
And hey, they had some really crazy stuff too, like burning criminals alive and mocked 00:02:32
novel Beatles when they floated to the arena. 00:02:40
The Colosseum was not just a stadium, it was a super exciting place for all kinds of entertainment. 00:02:44
So adventurers, next time you see pictures of the Roman Colosseum, remember the amazing 00:02:53
shows and events that happen there, it's like stepping back in time to the ultimate 00:02:59
spectacle. 00:03:05
See you next time. 00:03:09
