Good morning, Buyside Girls. How are you today? I hope that you are fine. 00:00:01
I know that the situation is difficult, but I think that you are doing it really, really great. 00:00:06
I'm checking all your pieces of work and I'm very happy with your work. 00:00:13
So I must tell you that you are doing it awesome. Congratulations. 00:00:18
Why am I preparing this video today? 00:00:24
Because I think that it's important that all together review important things to keep in mind regarding simple past. 00:00:27
In our seal of paper about the simple past, we can see the way we use it compared with the simple present. 00:00:41
So, here we can see that if we are speaking about yesterday, yesterday morning, last week, last Friday, yesterday evening, last weekend or last month, 00:00:49
We must use was or wasn't, were or weren't, instead of is or isn't, and are or aren't that are the forms of the verb to be, that is this special verb that we are studying, but when we are speaking about the present. 00:01:03
So, following this worksheet and the different color boxes, we can say, I was at school yesterday. 00:01:30
I wasn't at the supermarket yesterday morning. 00:01:43
She was at a restaurant last Friday, or she wasn't at the library last week. 00:01:49
and also they were at the swimming pool last weekend 00:01:57
or they weren't in Madrid last month. 00:02:03
So, very, very important to remember the people, 00:02:07
the subjects that are going with was 00:02:17
and the ones that are going with were. 00:02:20
We must remember that we must use I was, he, she or it was 00:02:24
And then we, you and they always with were 00:02:34
How do we remember this? 00:02:39
Because we already know the simple present 00:02:42
And we know that I, he, she and it are going with is 00:02:45
and we, you and they, are going, we, are. 00:02:51
Now, when this is clear, let's continue checking the questions. 00:02:57
Regarding the questions, 00:03:07
first thing that is very, very important to notice 00:03:09
is that there are different types of questions. 00:03:12
Here we can see that these questions are starting directly with the verb to be. 00:03:17
So here the thing that we have to do is switch the order between the subject in the affirmative 00:03:30
sentence and the verb to be in the past and then we say the verb first and then the subject. 00:03:39
Instead of telling, I was at a school yesterday, for the question we say, was I at a school yesterday? 00:03:47
And how do we answer to these questions? 00:04:02
For these questions we need yes or no. 00:04:06
Yes, I was. 00:04:10
No, I wasn't. 00:04:12
but always we need to answer with a yes or no. 00:04:13
But there are other types of questions, 00:04:19
as this one that you see here in the second part, 00:04:23
that are starting with particles, words, 00:04:29
like where, what, with, who. 00:04:34
Why do they start using these words? 00:04:39
because they are not asking for a yes or no. 00:04:42
They are asking about a location or place, a thing, 00:04:46
the person that is in one place at one time, 00:04:54
but not for a yes or no. 00:05:01
For example, where was I yesterday? 00:05:05
we can't answer to this question telling 00:05:09
yes I was or no I wasn't because they are asking 00:05:13
where, they are asking the place, the location 00:05:17
so then how do we answer to this question 00:05:20
like for example I was at home yesterday 00:05:24
imagine that they ask you 00:05:29
what were you doing yesterday 00:05:32
they are not asking you for a yes or a no 00:05:39
they are asking you for the thing that you were doing yesterday 00:05:44
so you must answer with something like 00:05:48
I was listening to music yesterday 00:05:54
so it's very very important to notice 00:05:59
that the words that appear here with red color 00:06:03
are different than the word that appears here 00:06:07
with blue color. So it's different, the past 00:06:10
of the bird to be, that is with red color, and 00:06:15
the word that we can find at the beginning of the question 00:06:19
asking for a place or location. 00:06:23
So here in this example, we can see 00:06:28
where were the earrings that day? 00:06:30
the earrings were on the table 00:06:34
on the 23rd of April 00:06:37
where red color is the simple past 00:06:40
of the bird to be 00:06:45
indicating the place where the earrings 00:06:46
on the location where the earrings were that day 00:06:51
and where with blue color 00:06:54
is asking for this location 00:06:56
please be careful with the spelling 00:06:58
of these two words 00:07:03
and don't confuse them i know that is tricky but you can do it really really well if you pay 00:07:05
attention just a little bit of attention please keep it on your mind so boys and girls i send you 00:07:13
my best wishes and continue working like this if you have any problem or question you know that 00:07:22
you can contact me using your email okay and I will help you bye bye 00:07:30
