Rivers and watersheds in Spain
Hello boys and girls, hello again. We're going to keep on learning about rivers.
00:00:00
In this section, which is on page 27, the name or title of this section is
00:00:06
How do you read a watershed map?
00:00:14
So, we're going to talk, we're going to treat the watersheds in the Iberian Peninsula.
00:00:17
As you can see, you see three watersheds, three colours in here.
00:00:23
The green one, the orange one, the pink one.
00:00:27
and this is because all the rivers in Spain are grouped in watersheds.
00:00:30
What is a watershed?
00:00:37
A watershed is an area of land where all the rivers flow to the same sea or ocean.
00:00:38
We have to group the rivers in Spain, and this is a form, this is the way we group the rivers.
00:00:47
We do, we group in watersheds, okay?
00:00:56
The watershed is, es la tierra o la zona o el lugar donde todos los ríos desembocan.
00:01:01
You remember flow?
00:01:10
Desembocan en el mismo mar o océano.
00:01:11
So all these rivers flow into the Atlantic Ocean, that's why we call it Atlantic Watershed.
00:01:15
What about the Cantabrian Watershed?
00:01:23
All these rivers flow to the Cantabrian into the Cantabrian Sea.
00:01:28
And what about the Mediterranean Sea Watershed?
00:01:34
Sorry, the Mediterranean Watershed has all these rivers and all of these flow into the same place, into the Mediterranean Sea.
00:01:38
So, we have three watersheds in the Iberian Peninsula, which is the Cantarian Watershed, the Atlantic Watershed, and the Mediterranean Watershed.
00:01:51
Let's talk about some things. We're going to see some here, some definitions.
00:02:04
And we're going to put it a little bit. We can do it later here.
00:02:10
Okay, have a look at the map. It's the same as in the book. Okay, but we have here, we're going to press Atlantic and see which is the longest and the shortest river in the Atlantic Courser.
00:02:17
The El Tajo river, El Río Tajo, is 1,007 kilometers, so it's the longest.
00:02:38
So we're talking about length now.
00:02:49
What I'll give it is 657 kilometers long, which is the shortest in Atlantic watershed.
00:02:51
Let's see, it's saying that the rivers are long
00:03:02
These rivers in Atlantic watershed are long
00:03:08
Because the source is in the mountains far from the ocean
00:03:11
Así que el nacimiento es desde las montañas pero lejos del mar
00:03:17
So the course is longest
00:03:23
These rivers in this watershed, in the Atlantic watershed are longest
00:03:26
and they have a higher flow regime in the spring and autumn than in summer yes in summer is drier
00:03:31
because it's very hot and the water you know get gets dry okay so it's hot it's hotter and
00:03:42
in summer they have less flow okay what about
00:03:51
the mediterranean sea what does it say here not here yeah mediterranean watershed okay it says
00:03:58
they are short they are short the longest is the ebro and the shortest is segura okay
00:04:10
the longest is the ebro and segura is the shortest so we're talking about plumb here
00:04:19
what else, what else
00:04:25
they have a low flow as well
00:04:27
un régimen de caudal
00:04:30
bajito
00:04:32
no son muy caudalosos
00:04:33
a low flow regime, you remember
00:04:36
with exception again
00:04:38
of the Ebro
00:04:40
pero el único que no tienes
00:04:41
bajo caudal es el Ebro
00:04:44
river because they
00:04:45
flow in our areas
00:04:48
with little rain
00:04:50
porque no hay mucha lluvia en esta zona
00:04:51
for the rest of the rivers, not for the Ebro.
