00:00:00
Since December, a series of cyclones has pounded the shores of Madagascar.
00:00:03
The most recent, Tropical Storm Jaya, came ashore along the northeastern coast in early
00:00:07
April.
00:00:11
Together, the storms have killed almost 90 people, destroying homes, crops and schools,
00:00:12
leaving more than 10,000 children without usable classrooms.
00:00:18
Our grandfather had us climb to the roof.
00:00:22
Then I saw houses, which crumbled and were swept away by water, and trees too.
00:00:26
Our school was here.
00:00:31
It was struck by trees that were carried by the water.
00:00:32
It is like a biscuit soaked in water.
00:00:36
The parts that were underwater fell down right away, all at the same time.
00:00:40
And in the other areas, in the other villages that we visited, the schools' infrastructures
00:00:46
are completely destroyed.
00:00:54
Here is our school, where we studied.
00:01:00
There were two classrooms.
00:01:03
While the water was flowing, a lot of trees were broken and fell.
00:01:09
This tree was carried by the water and struck the school, which fell down and was swept
00:01:12
away.
00:01:17
That's all that is left of the school wall.
00:01:18
My school bag was swept away by the water, and so were my slate, my pens, my books, my
00:01:23
blouse and my shoes.
00:01:29
Because their houses were swept away by the water, we will give them straightaway supplies
00:01:37
in a big trunk called school-in-a-box, and UNICEF will bring these school-in-a-box kits
00:01:42
to the villages that have been devastated.
00:01:46
For the rebuilding of partially damaged buildings, we will try to involve the community so it
00:01:50
can contribute to rebuilding and repairing the walls.
00:01:54
We want our school to be rebuilt, and my village too.
00:01:59
I want to stay in my village forever.
00:02:02
I want to go back to school.
